Though the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington is nearing a century in existence, its Winter Restaurant Week event is a bit younger in age. The one wintry week wherein over 100 restaurants in DC and its immediate suburbs highlight their menus with affordable $22 brunch/lunch and $35 dinner offerings (before gratuity) occurs from January 22-28, 2018. We’re excited about this, and we also know that there’s literally tons of options and adventurous flavor combinations. Therefore, we’ve decided to take a look at 11 of our absolute must-visit locations, and also devised menu pairings, too. These are merely suggestions…but we assure you, they’re DELICIOUS suggestions. Given Barcode’s location directly in the midst of a plethora of associations, start-ups, and professional organizations, it’s the perfect spot for a high powered lunch meeting. The she crab soup appetizer with steak and fries main course is an amazing surf and turf combination. Throw in the apple pie with vanilla gelato and bourbon caramel and it’s going to make heading back to the office quite the difficult proposition, indeed!

Ambar promises “modern international Balkan cuisine. If looking for a seemingly adventurous take on lunch during restaurant week, the Balkan kebob (beef & veal/spring onions/kajmak/ fries) and panna cotta (Roseberry sorbet/peanut crumble/orange jelly/strawberry yogurt) combination are fairly true to tradition. Most intriguing/unknown in this dish is kajmak, aka a rich and sweet boiled milk cream delicacy.

Yes, Mastro’s is indeed, as pictured, a steakhouse. But there’s something stunning about the possibility of a “seafood double play” of a tuna tostada appetizer with a pan-seared Scottish salmon with truffle butter main course that is amazing. Mastro’s well-regarded profiteroles (sweet creme-filled French pastry balls) with vanilla ice cream for dessert sounds like an ideal completion.

Master chef/owner Jose Andres’ Mexican street food destination offers a rare four-course lunch offering. “Ceviche con citricos” features striped bass in a pineapple-habanero marinade with citrus, jicama, and fresno chiles. As for “Col de bruselas estilo San Quintín?” Crispy Brussel sprouts with a chile de árbol sauce, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, and lime. A main course of “Taco de frijoles y requeson” is a blend of vegetarian frijoles refritos with house made sour orange requeson cheese, salsa chiltamate and garnished with onions and cilantro. Add in a dessert of “Pastel de tres leches con piña” that is a rum and pineapple cake served with a scoop of caramel ice cream, and the meal has truly been a citrus-filled delight.

A three-course brunch option from Mike Isabella, one of the DC Metropolitan area’s most recognized Greek cuisine experts sounds delicious. We suggest pairing the favosalata (yellow lentils, scallions, black garlic, pine nuts) spread appetizer with the crispy lamb, potatoes, and feta frittata main course, and baklava french toast with walnuts and seasonal fruit third course. Mike Isabella’s Arroz is described as his “take on the contemporary flavors of Southern Spain and Morocco.” Therefore, for a four-course restaurant week dinner we suggest starting with the winter green salad comprised of shaved apple, san simon, and fried pecans, topped with a smoked pomegranate vinaigrette. The fried cauliflower delivered with crispy pig ear, mitmita yogurt, and grilled greens, plus the chermoula lamb ribs served with kohlrabi salad, spiced yogurt, and coriander honey both sound delightful. Topping that off with carrot & ginger, tahini & caramel, and ras el hanout (Moroccan top-shelf spice mixture) cookies? Amazing.

At the 14th Street NW restaurant that marries Asian and Latin culture and cuisines, starting your restaurant week dinner with the four-piece Sashimi or Nigiri (Tuna, Salmon, Hamachi, and Shrimp) appetizer makes sense, as Sakerum boasts some of the freshest and most inventive fish presentations in the city.
