Zei Club, Insomnia, Dream, Fur, Ibiza, Ultrabar. Washington DC Nightclubs that have one thing in common….GLOW. A party that started back in 1999 out of a conversation in ZEI alley (alley located on 14th and I streets, next to Lima Lounge). GLOW founder Antonis Karagounis says “I had just read an article named Northern Lights on an EDM magazine. It was talking about the glowsticking culture and how it’s associated with Trance music, and I thought, if we bring Trance to DC, GLOW is a great name for the party”.
GLOW, premiered at ZEI club in October of 1999 and it was packed every single week. ZEI club had never been as packed, and it had been open for almost a decade. GLOW was not based on any DJ’s; it was based on the sound of DJ Pete Moutso. “Back then, Trance had these long breaks and the buildup to the main beats of the song” Moutso says. So we thought about utilizing the breaks for a crazy intro to the night, with balloon drops, confetti cannons, stringers etc.” The first guest DJ was George Acosta from Miami, an amazing night. Since then, GLOW has been in the forefront of EDM music by bringing future top 10 DJ’s when most people had not even heard of them. Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz and others, came to DC for the first time, and have been calling the Nation’s Capital their home ever since. Other GLOW guest DJ’s include, Paul Van Dyk, Sasha and Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Kaskade, David Guetta, Benny Benassi, Deep Dish and hundreds of others.
This Saturday, October 3rd, GLOW is celebrating 10 years of musical evolution at FUR Nightclub. The past 10 years have brought awards and accolades for the event. However, GLOW is not resting. This fall, the biggest DJ’s in the world are coming to help GLOW celebrate its first decade. Tips and Tricks to a Great Saturday night at Ultrabar. (Not calling it an Idiot’s Guide)
Here’s a little insider’s tips and tricks guide for an amazing Saturday night at Ultrabar Nightclub and Lounge in DC.
Where is it: Ultrabar is located at 911 F Street, NW, Washington DC, at the corner of 9th and F Streets. It is 2 blocks away from the Verizon Center, and right next to Gallery Place Chinatown and Metro Center metro stations. Metro runs until 2-3 am depending on the station. There’s a lot of taxis available in the area, so don’t hesitate to cab it to the Club.
When to go: Doors open at 9pm. The club gets busy by 11:00 and packed by midnight.
Drink Specials: There’s an Open Bar (yes that means free drinks), from 9-10pm. Also $8 1800 silver Tequila, $6 007 drinks( pronounced double O 7’s), $8 Grand Marnier shots, $6 Patron Espresso shots, $5 Don Julio Tequila shots, and $5 Dos Equis beer until midnight.
Music Format: Main floor has Dance and Hip Hop. The DJ is actually using Video Mixing as well, which means that he’s actually mixing Videos with the songs and you can enjoy it on the big screen projection. There’s a Mezzanine overlooking the main floor with its own bar and a good amount of tables and couches if you wanna relax away from the madness.
Basement has Old School Hip Hop music. Check out the basement; it used to be the Vault of the Bank that occupied this century year old building many years ago and you can actually see the old safe deposit boxes still preserved in a glass display. There’s seating towards the back of the floor, in case you wanna relax and talk with your friends.
Bedroom is the second floor, recently renovated and looking modern and comfortable. Dance to the Latin Beats of DJ Mario; doing the Salsa is mandatory here!
Chroma is the top floor of Ultrabar. The music is International here and the crowd is definitely more eclectic on that floor. Chroma means color in Greek, and if you visit that floor you’ll see how it took its name.
How to save money, skip the line and look cool at the same time: Saturdays at Ultrabar are hot. There’s usually a very long line of people trying to get in. But guess what; you don’t have to wait in line, and you don’t have to pay!!!

We start the week off this Tuesday with College Night @ Lima, featuring $3 Dos Equis and $5 Stoli Redbull Vodkas all night long. Wednesday @ Lima is that one night of the week that you never know what celebrity you may run into. From the cast of Real World DC to Washington Nationals and Washington Capital players wednesdays @ lima is your one change to network with celebrities clubbing in Washington DC. This Thursday we have two exciting events for you! Dutch sensation Rene Amesz spinning live on the main floor and “Q” from Day 26 from P-Ditty’s “Making of the band” will be celebrating his birthday bash on the second floor (yes he will be in the house). Friday join us for ladies night @ Ultrabar where each week features the hottest ladies in the city.
