And once it’s over, I’ll be heading back to Lima Lounge for their I Love Wednesdays party for my midweek release. It’s 21+ tonight too, which makes the crowd totally different than the night before.

The 10th annual Kegs and Eggs concert is happening Friday, March 13 at the 9:30 Club where there will be plenty of Guiness beer to go around, in honor of St Patty’s just around the corner. Its also Ladies Night at Ultrabar, a nightclub with five floors of the hottest and most diverse music and people in the city. SUNDAY: Ahhh, Sunday funday. I’m sure I wont have too much energy left, but that won’t stop me from attending the annual DC Saint Patrick’s Day with a parade along Constitution Avenue – 7th to 17th Streets NW. It’s a two-and-a-half hour parade that will include floats, marching bands, pipe bands, military, police, and fire departments. Local Irish pubs will sponsor parade parties featuring Irish musicians! Get ready for Mark Knight this Saturday at Glow!
International DJ/Producer, Mark Knight is known by his empire label, Toolroom Records. The Toolroom has steadily grown immensely from 2004 and have added artists such as Fedde Le Grand, David Guetta, and Fatboy Slim over the years. Since then Toolroom has become the biggest, fastest selling label on Beatport with the help of dance act, Faithless in 2009. Mark remains a force to be reckoned with, as his abilities supercede the glorified title of “DJ.” He has taken on his calling on the business side as he spearheads Toolroom, taking it from Mainstead, UK and giving it a worldwide recognition in dance music.
Marks latest release, Stopover resulted from locking himself in the studio for 48 hours with Dragon (Dirty South), and out was birthed the February 17th track released on Beatport. Mark lets me know that the story behind the name Toolroom and its success, “I set up Toolroom Records with my brother back in 2004. I often have to pinch myself when I think of how it’s grown from a tool shed outside my parent’s house (hence Toolroom Records)- to where we are now as a business, with the caliber of artists we have signed to the label and the amount of people involved with Toolroom Knights.”
As momentum takes its course in hard work and dedication, so does recognition. Mark Knight received that in the form of his first Grammy nomination for his production work on the Black Eyed Peas album, E.N.D. Mark remains humble when asked about this colossal acknowledgment, “[The] hook up for the track came through David Guetta. We worked across the net and got the track finished. I couldn’t believe it when I found out we’d been nominated for a Grammy. Nothing has changed. But off the back of the Grammy nomination, there’s some more interesting projects in the pipeline.” Mark emphasizes the new projects that will be emerging and will include him, of course, his partner, Wolfgang Gartner, D. Ramirez and Dave Spoon. The kicker happens to be the Mark Knight touch to a remix he is doing for Ginuwine, Timbaland and Missy Elliot!
Outside of that, Mark Knight has a few surprises that you will hear during the Winter Music Conference. All I could get out of Mark is it’s for mega acts, Underworld and Faithless. As he says, “It’s a bit hush, hush”, but I guarantee you will hear those tracks in his sets. The full Toolroom squad will be playing at the Terrace at Space on Friday 26th. “D.Ramirez, me, Dave Spoon, Funkagenda and a very special ‘super styling’ guest” will be there. I am guessing Fedde Le Grand?
A man that wears many hats, Mark doesn’t seem like he sways far from his Gemini dualistic traits. Busy and on the go all the time, this DJ,”loves a good cup of English breakfast tea. Not very rocking roll” (he knows). As many artists like Mark, would like to come to DC more, “I’ve only played DC twice before and both times were really good. [I am] Looking forward to coming back to GLOW, it’s a cool club and the crowd is great.”
-Dee Sanae

Gareth Emery at Glow, Feb 13th!
Even though 2009 hit many hard with the recession, for Gareth Emery, last year proved to be most rewarding and satisfying. Gareth landed himself a nice spot at #9 on the DJ Mag Top 100 and spent more time at Beatport’s trance chart than any other artist. Gareth started at age four, playing the piano and rocked in bands from grade sixth to college, headlining for acts such as Oasis and Green Day in Southampton’s (UK) Joiners. When interviewed or written about, Gareth still carries association with trance. I had a chance to catch up with this young 30 year-old EDM star on his way back from his last gig in Seoul, Korea.
Curiosity got the best of me, and I wanted to know what Gareth thought about present day trance and if it even still existed with all the new tools and programs producers use these days. Gareth definitely agreed and stated, “ For as long as there are people that classify themselves as “trance” fans, and DJs that think of themselves as “trance” DJs, of which there both are many, then it definitely still exists.”
Knowing that a lot of fans and music critics often times pigeon-hole artists that started with trance, I asked Gareth if he minded the constant title of trance connected to him (as most artists evolve). “I don’t mind the label but I hate the pigeon-holing that goes with it. Unfortunately, some of the commercial trance that was around a few years ago has tainted the word for a lot of people, so you have this situation where house music is seen as credible and the trance scene is cheesy, and it’s just BS. Both house and trance have their cheesy side and they both have their underground, deeper side. It’s a shame a lot of people don’t get that.”
Gareth Emery’s most recent show at GlowFor Gareth, 2009 also brought his latest feat, The Sound of Garuda which you can check out at www.garethemery.com. He is back in his studios working on original material and gearing up for the Winter Music Conference. So if you guys are heading out to Miami this year, Gareth will be “testing the waters” with his new, unreleased music. Gareth wants to “gauge crowd reaction and a lot of music that probably won’t see the light of day for another six months or so.” Rumors of his artist album release, is an actual work in progress for him. It is hard for him to find time with his schedule nonetheless, I am sure his fans will not be regretful.
There’s never a lazy day in the life of Gareth. But when he does catch one, he is normal just like everyone- by watching a movie, taking a run, and spending down time at the pub with close friends. He admits when is trying to take time off, that he “struggles not to check his emails on the Blackberry once or twice.” When he needs to escape everything you might find him in these worldwide destinations: South of France, Wales, Dubai, Singapore, Vancouver or Miami, let’s hope he can actually make his flight, as he admits he is “late for everything.”
As his booking gets closer for DC, Gareth shares his thoughts on the scene in DC at CLUB GLOW, “Brilliant vibe! That stays right until the end of the night and [I] cannot wait to be back!”
Glow is held every Saturday night at Fur Nightclub DC, and every Thursday night at Lima Restaurant and Lounge. Glow has been consistently rated as one of the best weekly DC nightclub events.
