6 Ways to Keep Your Friends Longer
More Girl & Bro Code You May Wanna Follow
Contributing Writer Amanda Hanowitz – @getwitzit
Ladies:

1. Ladies First:
Boys come and go, break your heart, tell you lies, but your girlfriends are forever.
(Editors Note: Until they get catty behind your back, throw you under the bus and sleep with the guy you like)
2. Honesty is the best policy:
When your friend asks you, “Does this dress make me look fat?” If the answer is yes, say yes. Don’t lie or you may only embarrass her further.
3. Be a Good Wingwoman:
Know when to swoop in and save your best friend from that horrible creep hitting on her. And vice versa, know when to let your girl get her flirt on if it looks like she’s having a good time.
(Editors Note: Or getting some sap to keep buying her drinks)
4. Don’t Hook-up w/ Your Friends Exes:
There are plenty of other fish in the sea, you can afford to find someone else.
5. Don’t Speak Badly About her BF:
If he sucks a big one, let her figure it out. Save your friendship and stay out of it… whether it means tainting their relationship or yours.
6. Don’t Go to the Bathroom Alone:
This one is pretty self-explanatory. Ever seen a girl go to the bathroom without her girlfriends by her side? Didn’t think so.
(Editor’s Note: I still don’t get this)
Gents:

1. Bros Before Hoes:
Don’t put a hoe before your bro. Simple as that.
(Editors Note: Unless she’s really hot)
2. Don’t Get Whipped:
You have the best and most beautiful girlfriend in the world, we get it. But don’t forget about your bros, or yourself.
(Editor’s Note: Don’t be a fuckin’ purse-holder, bro.)
3. Leave the Relatives Alone:
Do not hook-up with your best friend’s sister. Just don’t. That’s like, his little innocent sister who has never been touched.
(Editor’s Note: LOL)
4. Don’t Cock Block:
Don’t be a douche.
5. Respect “Fives”:
If you’re sitting around with your friends and one gets up and says nothing, his spot is fair game. If he calls ‘fives’ you must respect it… or die.
6. Do not let your friend go home with an ugly chick:
Need more of an explanation? Didn’t think so.
(Editor’s Note: Or better yet, make sure no one else sees them leaving. And don’t tell anyone. Fat chicks need love too bro…)
LOOK!!! It’s more man code including rules for umbrellas, compliments at the gym and the always important, rules of the man-hug.
Beating the Heat in DC
How to Beat the Heat in DC
Contributing Writer Robbie
It’s hot right now, really hot, and sometimes DC residents just need to cool down. Here are some ways to take a break from the sun and cool off.
Take the metro
Navigating the city by foot can be both time consuming and frustrating in this weather. All metro cars are air-conditioned Many of the under ground stations have air chillers located in the center of the platform. You can feel the cool air by standing near those tall structures that have the station names on them.
Do not bust open fire hydrants
Instead, check out the Georgetown waterfront, which has tons of interactive fountains and wont get you in trouble. Its located on the Potomac shore near Wisconsin and Water street NW.
Go to a museum / Local library
Museums are not only free but great ways to cool off. Try going to one you haven’t been too. A local library is also a great way to get out the sun. Why not combine being productive with hitting the books.
Get an iced coffee
Naturally cold drinks are perfect ways to quell the heat. Mix it up and try something different than Starbucks. Check out M.E Swing Coffee at 1702 G Street NW on the corner of 17th. Filter Coffeehouse & Espresso Bar, which has locations at 1726 20th Street and 1916 I Street (between Penn & K) is another great alternative.
Pool
Whether it’s a local pool or your friends apt building, taking a dip will surely make you feel better. Try checking out a pool party with some friends. Next best thing (editors note: better)? Head over to Ultrabar for the Lifeguard Party August 2nd.
Go see a movie
It doesn’t get much cooler at night so why not take that girl or guy you’ve been seeing to a movie. You know you’ve been thinking about all those sweet movies that have been coming out.
Suck it up
Know that it could always be worse. You should never stress over something you can’t control, especially the weather. Try popping on some headphones on your way work to keep your mind off the heat and make sure you stay hydrated.

Is Instagram the Only Positive Social Media Experience?
InstaPLUR. But is it even real?
Commentary by Antonis Karagounis (The Boss) • @antonisdc
Looking through my social media channels, I can’t help but feel slightly nauseous. Everyone, and I mean everyone on my Instagram feed is posting photos of their amazing lives.
Beautiful people. Amazing locations. Expensive Cars. Mouthwatering food. Wild parties. Couples in love. And happy families. It’s disgusting.

I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade but let’s be honest – your food cannot be that amazing… every time. You did not wake up in that new Bugatti. You do not live in that amazing home with the ridiculous pool. All those kids at those wild parties are probably 19 and wasted. No you’re not a model, so for the love of god please stop posing as if you are.
It all just seems a bit fake.

Twitter can at least give us a real time feed of real life event like politics, crime and the occasional celebrity drama. Even Facebook has the occasional social responsibility-call to action (see Kony 2012) or an up-to-the-minute world news break.
But Instagram seems to have found a purpose beyond making iPhone pics look cool.
Imagery is in and of itself a universal language. No matter what you speak, you can always understand an image.
Every photo I see on Instagram depicts some sort of ‘feel good’ experience, moment or sense. And they get more interaction than anything you post on Facebook or Twitter. A picture is worth 1000 words and there’s not one negative thing to be said about any you find on Instagram.

Maybe Mark Zuckerberg was on to something when he spent a billion dollars on a two-year-old company. The Social Media Generation (ya I just called it that) is tired of negativity and bad news. Instagram is the perfect social media escape. It has created a Utopia where beauty, peace, abundance and love are the only things you see. And the occasional person bragging about something. But hey – they’re just trying to feel good, right?
Does it entertain? Most definitely. Is it real? No. But I know about 130 million users who seem to enjoy their daily escape from reality!
Instagram is utopian happiness.

DC Nightlife Interviews: Photographers
Written by: Anna Pineapple
These are the people who never stay in one spot at the club and are usually recognized more for their camera than their face. Here’s what they have to say about photographing DC nightlife:
Danilo Lewis, the house photographer for Lima: Mute|Teka|Fujimar and EDM DC and has been in the game for the past 3 years. “What first drew me into it was the music. I have taken photos at almost every major club in DC and for some of the best promotion companies in the area and what I love most is the constant change and diversity this cities nightlife has to offer.” He hopes one day to be director of media for a major label/artist.
As the scene keeps growing, the influx of aspiring nightlife photographers will continue.
Many photographers are extremely frustrated with the amount of amateurs looking to shoot in exchange for an event ticket and press pass. “Too many venues in the city put so little value into great photography, that they settle for just a GWAC (guy/gal with a camera) and not a professional photographer. If your putting so much time, effort and money into your business it would only seem logical that you would want to hire a professional to properly showcase and capture your venue with great photos.”
With photography, like many things in life, you get what you pay for.
Producing great photos isn’t the only requirement for a nightlife photographer. A good
attitude and patience is key, especially when the shooting conditions consist of large crowds, drunken people, loud music, and unpredictable lighting. Going with the flow will ensure you do your job well and actually enjoy it! David Nguyen is a freelance photographer who got his start by bringing his camera to house parties. “As far as nightlife goes, communication and people skills are a must. Be engaging and respectful. Proper photo etiquette will go a long way. If you don’t like it, delete it. Overall, have fun!” What is his least favorite part of the job? “Not enough drink tickets.”
Shooting for major EDM artists, Echostage, Made Event NYC, and SoundGarden Hall in Philly, has made Doug Van Sant a household name in EDM photography. Go to any Echostage event, and you’ll likely see Doug walking around with two huge cameras strapped to him and fans clamoring to get a photograph. Watch out though, Doug isn’t afraid of the delete button and chooses his photos wisely. “I’m not a fan of obnoxious people who do stupid stuff on camera. If you flip the bird at my camera, I will delete the photo immediately. Sorry, our nightlife scene is about having fun and that’s what I’m trying to capture.”
Being in the right place at the right time is the name of the game when photographing the
constantly changing lighting conditions. “Poor lighting conditions are awful. Once you shoot on stage at Ultra and other major festivals that have over-the-top production, a dark club can be incredibly frustrating. [However] Nothing is more satisfying when kryo is blasting and hands are in the air and you look at your camera and see everything is exposed perfectly. That’s priceless.”
For those interested in photographing nightlife or music events, keep shooting. It will help you evolve your craft and also may help you land jobs. “For me, I just did as much shooting for myself as possible before it started to get noticed. Once people saw I knew what I was doing and I took it seriously, the job offers came in.”
Kathy Vitkus has been shooting in the EDM scene for many years and is a testament that you really can do what you love. “My favorite part of the job is being a part of it all, that I still never take it for granted and that I hope I never do. I am often consciously aware of this great party going on while it’s happening and the fact that it’s so open and welcoming and I’m a part of it (participant). I am so grateful for all of these opportunities over the years and it’s still very surreal. To be able to capture the history-in-the-making is a bonus!”

Why Trap Is The Next Big Thing
What Is Trap?
For the last few years EDM has been gaining much popularity and music festivals like Ultra, Electric Daisy Carnival, Electric Zoo and Camp Bisco have been attracting large crowds of house-heads and introducing many other sub-genres into the mix as well; one of them being trap. From the beginning of time every music genre has had its time when it starts to develop into something else and has a recognizable difference to its listeners and this is what has been happening with trap music.
You may have heard of trap and think it’s just extreme hip-hop, well you’re wrong. Trap is basically what you get when you combine heavy house beats with hip-hop. It originated in the Early 2000’s from Southern Hip Hop and crunk music with artists like Lil’ Jon, the Ying Yang Twins and Young Jeezy. Its sound has gone through many changes and progressed a lot as many different artists and DJs have influenced its sound but it can mostly be characterized by relatively low BPM (beats per minute), hi-hats, soaring synthesizers and kick drums that pulse and reverberate.
Today trap music has been very influenced by Dubstep but without the constant bass and excessive commotion that there is in some Dubstep music. It contains elements from house, drum and bass, dubstep, EDM and moomahton. It has been labeled as the “new dubstep” and “new moombahton” and DJs like Diplo, Flosstradamus and Bauuer are continuing to widen its popularity among both EDM fans and hip-hop fans.
The slow BPMs allow even the most uncoordinated, biggest lack of rhythm white girl dancers to find the beat and not dance off beat like usual. The heavy drops and kick drums make every girl want to booty pop so if you don’t want to see chicks wiggling and bopping around with their hands in the air like pogo sticks anymore than try turning off your stupid Ke$ha and Taylor Swift songs, turn these tracks up and watch what happens.
