Summer Concerts in DC

YES. FINALLY. The best music season is upon us and we could NOT be more excited. Here is our abbreviated list of reasons why:

Cosculluela

When: June 3
Where: Echostage
Why: Appearing with Justin Quiles for the first time ever at Echostage, Cosculluela is sure to put on a great show. His beats are known to get people dancing and leave them wanting more.

_________________________

Benny Benassi

20160604_benny

When: June 4
Where: Echostage
Why: He never fails to disappoint. This isn’t Benny’s first rodeo at Echostage (or in general, obviously) and those years of dropping bass has honed his DJ skills to the ultimate level. You’ll be sure to get some satisfaction out of attending this show (I’m sorry, I had to).

_________________________

Twenty One Pilots

When: June 10
Where: Merriweather
Why: These guys came through Echostage a few months ago and blew the roof off two nights of sold out shows. Their showmanship as well as talent are a sight to be seen and one that is well worth seeing on Merriweather’s stage.

_________________________

Barenaked Ladies

When: June 15
Where: Wolf Trap
Why: Because.. IT’S BEEN a long time since you heard that song and it’s about time you revisit this band.

_________________________

Above & Beyond

20160703_ab-fb

When: 4th of July weekend
Where: Echostage
Why: Yet another powerhouse is gracing the Echo stage. A&B have sold out so many double-header shows that odds are by the time you finish this line, their tickets are already sold out. (You totally checked, didn’t you?)

_________________________

The Cure

When: June 22
Where: Merriweather
Why: The OG emo group is coming to our backyard and playing their new songs as well as, hopefully, some of the pioneering angst of their 80s hey-day. We know it’s Summer, but black is definitely the suggested attire.

_________________________

DC101 Kerfuffle

When: June 26
Where: Merriweather
Why: Blink-182 is headlining. If you need further reasoning, get out.

_________________________

Modest Mouse/Brand New

When: July 12
Where: Merriweather
Why: Because these alt-rockers will alt-er your world after just a few songs. Chances are you know a few of each bands’ songs separately already, but to hear these two playing together? In the same event? Fantastic.

_________________________

Moonrise

20160806_moonrise-fb

When: August 6-7
Where: Pimlico Race Course
Why: Mother of god, did you see phase ONE of the lineup? Based on that alone this will be nothing if not epic.

_________________________

Paul McCartney

When: August 9 – 10
Where: Verizon Center
Why: It’s such a great opportunity to see Sir McCartney in person, and it’s not every day that he comes so close to home. You haven’t heard “Hey Jude” until you’ve heard 50,000 people soulfully sing along with him.

_________________________

Drake

When: August 19-20
Where: Verizon Center
Why: Anyone who takes Meek down the way Drake did deserves an audience. Lucky for you, he’s got two shows planned for Verizon so your chances of getting a ticket are twice as good.

_________________________

Miranda Lambert

When: August 25
Where: Merriweather
Why: It’s the last country concert of the season, send the Summer off on a high note (literally)!

L8 Lounge “is for the upscale and sexy nightclubber in Washington looking for something new” according to the owners who recently opened the new hot spot. It’s an upscale and sexy new club for the sophisticated DC social who is tired of the same old scene.

Decked out in chandeliers and chrome-covered bars, L8 is located on 15th street and is well worth checking out. VIP tables, a full bar, and over 3,000 square feet: the cool atmosphere is perfect for a late night on the town. It’s just a short walk from the K Street corridor and a only few blocks away from sister club Soundcheck.

Things You Should Buy with Your Tax Return

Tax season: simultaneously the worst and best time of the year. You spent a long 12 months watching your paychecks go to taxes and now you’re spending hours and/or dollars filing your dumb forms JUST in time for the April 15th deadline. But the bonus? CASH MONIES. Forreal though, it totally sucks. Right up until you get that glorious check in the mail with your return on it. So what are you going to do with the influx of dough? You could be responsible and save the money, invest in a stable future. OR…

Go on a trip

Whether you’ve been planning one for a while and could use the boost or just needed the funds and a good reason: now’s the time. The weather is starting to heat up and it’s just before the rush of summer weekend trips start happening. We aren’t saying to go crazy here – a $400 refund does not equate to a $4000 tip to Europe. Start small and see where you can go. Need a place to start? A few of our local-ish suggestions can be found here and here.

_________________________

Pick up the tab

taxreturn_cheers

Show your friends some real appreciation and pay for your group’s tab on the next night out. They put up with your bs the whole year, they earned it (and odds are it’s probably your turn anyway). Pay them back in booze and love <3

Hit up that classy ass restaurant with the $12 soup

date-brunch

Splurge on a fancy dinner and amazing food. We’ve got a ton of places for you to go listed already: best pizza, best bbqbest late-night food for those of you who enjoy fine dining after hours, and some hidden gems you have to try. And no: they don’t all have $12 soups, but they are all worth splurging on.

_________________________

Revamp your closet

taxreturn_closet

Spring cleaning = spring reviving. Get rid of your dusty last-season clothes by donating them to a nearby drop box (the Goodwill bins are everywhere) and then hit up your favorite stores for their post-winter pre-summer sales. A few bucks can go a long way if you spend it right.

_________________________

Empty your cart

taxreturn_cart

YOU KNOW THE ONE. You did some online window shopping one day and added a hundred dollars worth of stuff but then backed out because the $4 shipping fee was too much. We ALL have that cart online that’s just been sitting there full of items ever since that fateful day. It’s time to acknowledge all those annoying “You left items in your cart!” (Oh really, DID I?) emails and follow through.

_________________________

Step up your gadget game

taxreturn_takemoney

There are a lot of cool things happening in the tech world right now. Forget the iThing 37Q and go for something useful that everyone doesn’t already have and will be totally jealous of. This list has a bunch of cool toys that are not only relatively affordable, but will make you wonder how you lived without them (Don’t let the title throw you: Dad or not, you will enjoy most if not all of them).

_________________________

Get a car

taxreturn_car

Your return may not be enough to purchase a brand new Lambo outright (if it is, you need to gtfo), but it will most definitely help you put a dent in the down payment of that ride you’ve been eyeing for the past few months. Just don’t put any actual dents in it once you get it.

_________________________

Go to a concert

taxreturn_concert

Do you not remember the last time you saw a live show? Don’t want to throw down too much on one night out? No more excuses. Your favorite band/artist/dj/act/group is coming up and if you’ve never seen them before it’s time you did something for yourself. Grab a friend, buy a ticket, and have the time of your life (we suggest one of the many epic shows coming up at Echostage).

You deserve a reward for all those hours you worked and spent doing taxes. If there was ever a time to splurge, it’s now.

Spring Break 2016

It’s the BEST TIME OF THE YEAR. Even if you aren’t in the school system and aren’t getting mandatory leave from work, it’s still an amazing time because it’s the promise of an end to this terrible Winter and a break in what always feels like the longest month of the year. But not all of us can swing a trip to some far away land like Panama City. So if you’re spring broke and can’t afford an epic vacation, there are a bunch of things you can do without having to purchase plane tickets.

Hike Shanendoah

It’s a free activity for those of you who are not looking to break the bank. It’s also a pretty amazing place if you’ve never been before. I mean LOOK AT THAT PICTURE – it’s beautiful! And it’s only 2 hours away! Why not change things up and get out while you have the mandatory time to? Don’t want to commit to driving all day? NO EXCUSES: they have nearby lodging and a ton of other things to do besides observing nature.

_________________________

Avoid the Crowds

spring_crowd

Because who wants to be a SHEEP and do what everyone else is doing? Go Somewhere during the week that you’d normally only get to see on a busy Saturday or Sunday. Our choice: the Smithsonian museums. Always. They’re free, SO close to the surrounding DC metro areas, and are even more enjoyable when a stroller isn’t running over your foot or a field trip isn’t pushing you through the exhibits.

_________________________

Deep Creek Lake

So maybe not all the snow has melted quite yet like in the picture, but it’s still just as fun and nice of a getaway as you think. Bonus: they have really sweet rentals you can grab for the week if you go with a big group or just a few people.

_________________________

Hit the slopes before the snow melts

snow_476x328

Lucky for you, we’ve already compiled a whole list of places you can go for this. Spring break makes for the most perfect conditions: warm weather, cold ground. Enjoy the outdoors and the snowy slopes while you can during this possibly tiny window. With the DMV weather, you never know if it’s going to be Winter for 2 more months, Summer on Friday, or 4 feet of snow next week.

_________________________

Go out on a Tuesday night

party-parties

Or Monday. Or Wednesday. Or all of the days just because you can. And because why not? No work + nowhere to be = no reason to turn down a good time. Tuesdays at Soundcheck are always fun if you want to start there (but we may be a bit partial).

_________________________

VA Beach or Ocean City

spring_476x328

Who says you have to go all the way down south to enjoy some sun? Grab some friends and road trip to a semi local beach for a good time.

_________________________

Renwick Museum

More of an indoors person? Totally cool. The Renwick Gallery reopened after a massive 2-year renovation and has some amazing exhibits to show off what it’s been up to. Refer back to our earlier idea of avoiding crowds – the weekdays are prime for super popular places like this. Get lost in some awe-inspiring art (like the one above by Patrick Doughery, courtesy of si.edu) with Wonder, the large scale installation exhibit that’s only around until mid-Summer. Did we mention this one is also free? We’re sold.

Netflix and chill

cold-cable

No but literally, though. Put on your favorite pair of 5-day pants, order some take-out, and watch Frank Underwood take over the world in the next season of House of Cards, which released early this month. Or watch every episode of Parks and Rec from start to finish. Or watch 7 movies without a break from the couch. The point is: calm down and tune out the world for a week, it’s good for you. Staycations are actually the best.

Get out of the house! Or stay in it. It’s up to you. But whatever you do: do what you want. Because you can.

Valentine’s Day in DC

Whether your status is single, taken, or the vague “It’s Complicated,” there is always something to do in the district on Valentine’s Day. This year the lovely holiday falls on an even lovelier Sunday – we say lovelier not just because of the lame pun, but because having it on a Sunday means your choices for what to do have expanded to include full-day, whole weekend, or Saturday night adventures! Perfect. Here are our picks for what to do:

Coco Sala

This place was MADE for Valentine’s Day. If you want to splurge a little and treat your significant other, this is most definitely the place to be. Their usual menu includes chocolate based drinks and sculpted desserts, we can’t even imagine what they have in store for the 14th. Make a reservation asap if you want any chance of eating there Sunday night. Image courtesy of districtweddings.com

Cupid’s Bar Crawl

Want to have fun, but not commit to one place? Cupid’s Bar Crawl is for you! For just $15 bucks (for now – if you wait to buy a ticket the price goes up) you have an all access pass to great specials for 12 bars and counting around Dupont Circle. Image courtesy of cupidsbarcrawl.com

Dinner Cruise or Champagne Brunch on the Potomac

nye-cruise

This option is swanky as sh*t. The brunch is a mid-morning cruise that is exactly what it sounds like: a buffet style brunch with a champagne toast for $70 per person. The dinner is basically the same thing but later in the day (obv), includes a bouquet of roses, and runs you around $120 per person ($140 if you book it for Valentine’s Day instead of the night before).  Image courtesy of spiritcruises.com

Be My Valentine at Ultrabar

20160212_bemyvalentine_1702x630

Don’t have anyone to celebrate with? Grab a few people and head to Ultrabar – dance the night away and maybe make some new friends. Great drink specials, 4 DJs, and 5 floors of music and dancing – how can’t you have a good time? And, hey, who knows: you could meet your Valentine!

Georgetown Chocolate Tour

chocolate-551424_960_720

Chocolate is the everlasting Valentine present, so why not gift a whole day of it? With visits to various famous bakeries and chocolatiers in the beautiful Georgetown area, this $50 guided tour is guaranteed to satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth.

Ice Skating

xmas-iceskate

Classic. This one is easy, inexpensive, and a lot of fun. Nothing like falling on your ass to break the ice with a new beau (pun not intended). Refer to our last post about where to go and how much to spend.

Cupid’s Undie Run
xmas-iceskate
Want to have fun AND help a great cause? Throw on your skivvies and raise money for the Children’s Tumor Foundation. Last year, the run raised over $3.3 million towards #EndNF and this year they plan to top it. Register now and pay just $40 to enter and feel good about your plans. Bonus: an “earned open bar” after the race. Cheers!

Weekend Getaway

We know, we know – we JUST talked about this in our last post, but Snowshoe has incredible deals for weekend stays and it’s only a 4 hour drive there. For just $69 per person you get lodging and 2-days of lift tickets. Spend some time away and hit the slopes for a weekend? Not too shabby for a mini-vaca. Image courtesy of snowshowmtn.com

Day Spa

wellness-285587_960_720

Grab a day of stress-free relaxation with your Valentine. Or not. Who says you need someone with you to have a great Valentine’s Day? There are a ton of spas in and around DC, find your favorite and treat yo self. It’s the day of love, why not love yourself?
