Matt Goldman is climbing the ladder to success, escalator style. From the moment he began, it was clear he had a natural affinity for spinning records. In just over a year, he has gone from complete unknown to opening for superstar DJ’s such as Afrojack, Kaskade, Max Vangeli, Funkagenda, and Thomas Gold.
Kicking off the summer with a bang, Matt won a global competition to open for Tiesto at the DC Armory in front of a sold out 10,000 person audience. He has recently gained mass recognition amongst the EDM world, due in part to his budding relationship with Avicii, performing alongside the Swedish sensation at four sold out shows in 2010.
Matt has quickly established a name for himself on the east coast, with regular bookings at prestigious clubs such as Glow Washington DC and Pacha NYC. He has appeared in many college towns across the country, and his mixes can now be heard blaring at parties anywhere from NYU to USC. Matt’s sound, a combination of uplifting house with dark and heavy underground beats, has won over discerning house music lovers and newcomers to the scene alike.

DC loves Cosmic Gate. The fact that they brought Wippenberg just makes it that much better! Every time they come to Glow, DC nightlife is out strong, and for good reason! Cosmic Gate pumps us up like no one else!
{tab=About Cosmic Gate}
Introduction: Over 11 boundary-pushing years, Nic Chagall and Bossi have developed Cosmic Gate into one of the most creative and highly-sought-after electronic music acts on the planet. Revered uber-producers, their combined musical acumen has made them evergreen favourites of trance music’s highest echelon. Four hugely-received albums have transported tracks like ‘Not Enough Time’, ‘Body of Conflict’, ‘Analog Feel’, ‘F.A.V.’ and classics including ‘Exploration of Space’ and Fire Wire onto a now uncountable number of dancefloors. As DJs, the effortless cool of their kinetic, enthralling live sets are seen by hundreds of thousands of club and festival goers annually. It’s this perfect storm of production and spinning power that saw them become the highest-climbers in DJ Mag’s 2009 Top 100 chart and land at no. 24 in 2010.
The pair first collaborated in the studio after a chance meeting late in ’98 at a label office in Cologne. It’s a production partnership that has become one of the dance world’s most successful. In their homeland of Germany, they’ve maintained a consistent level of chart success, with no fewer than 7 Top 40 singles to their name and claimed a UK top 10 hit with ‘Fire Wire’. Drawing on a broad-range of their individual musical tastes and inspirations, they’ve continued to modify and enhance their sound…
Following up the long-players ‘Rythm & Drums’ and ‘No More Sleep’, in 2006 they released ‘Earth Mover’, which saw a shift towards edgier, more expansive electronic dance music. It gave rise to the club hits ‘Analog Feel’, ‘Should Have Known’ and ‘I Feel Wonderful’ and garnered an IDMA nomination for Best Album of 2007. Latterly this was viewed by the press as a new ‘Year-1’ for Cosmic Gate. Three years later Nic and Bossi released their much-anticipated followup. ‘Sign of the Times’ contained 11 new tracks including vocal anthems ‘Body of Conflict’ & ‘Not Enough Time’ (featuring Denise Rivera and Emma Hewitt respectively) and the singles ‘F.A.V.’, ‘Flatline’, ‘Under Your Spell’, ‘London Rain’ and title track ‘Sign Of The Times’. The response to the album was nothing short of meteoric. They received a Best Selling Trance Act nomination in the 2010 Beatport Awards; scored an IDMA nom for ‘Not Enough Time’ and were catapulted 43 places up DJ Mag’s 2009 chart. In light of its extraordinary level of success, in September 2010 a double-disc Deluxe Edition of the album was released which included all the singles remixes and exclusive, specially prepared revamps of other S.O.T.T. tracks.
As DJs Nic and Bossi continue to whip floors to frenzy-level in all four corners. Most recently they’ve rocked some of America’s most prominent events – Electric Zoo, The Electric Daisy Festival, Audiotistic and Perfecto Night in Las Vegas among them. They’ve brought mayhem to Ibiza’s 2010 season with hugely received performances at Armada at Amnesia and Judgement Sundays, played mammoth the Global Gathering festival in Russia and headlined Godskitchen’s tours in Australia and Mexico. They’ve appeared in DJ Magazine’s list of Top 100 spinners for 7 consecutive years now and are regular festival attraction, spinning at events like Trance Energy, Mysteryland and Dance Valley in Holland, Smirnoff Experience in India and on the horizon Future Music in Australia in 2011.
Back2Back, Cosmic Gate’s on-going compilation series was devised as an at-home audioexpo of the pair’s club-wowing sound. 2010 saw the release of the 4th volume (through Holland’s highly-respected Black Hole Recordings label). Bringing Bossi and Nic’s tight, tense, futureproofed trance/prog/electro hybrid to the forefront, it once again included many of their own track edits.
Over their production lifetime, the Cosmic Gate remix has become nearly as illustrious as their productions. Essentially a blow-by-blow of trance music’s A-list, Nic and Bossi have lent their studio know-how to productions from Armin van Buuren, Tiësto, Ferry Corsten, Paul van Dyk,
Above & Beyond’s OceanLab project, Deadmau5 & Rank 1. They rewired John O’Callaghan’s mega-seller ‘Find Yourself’ to devastating effect and produced remixes of veteran trance producer Vincent De Moor’s ‘Fly Away’ and ‘Carte Blanche’ (Veracocha). In early 2010 Atlantic Records US approached them to remix James Horner’s ‘I See You’ – the main theme from the film Avatar. This run culminated in them being nominated for Best Remixer at the 2010 IDMAs. Most recently they have completed remixes for Robbie Rivera and Markus Schulz.
{tab=About Wippenberg}
One of the biggest rising stars in the Electronic Dance Music scene, and creator of the club
hits “Chakalaka” and “Pong”!
Genre-warping electronic music adventurer Wippenberg (a.k.a. Olaf Dieckmann) has been supplying the world’s dancefloors with audio titans for close to 15 years. Most recently renowned for his neoclassical- anthems „Chakalaka“ and „Pong“, later receiving IDMA 2010 nomination as Best Progressive House Track alsongside David Guetta and Deadmau5. Wippenberg’s music hazes the
multiple boundaries of house, electro, trance and techno. This unique composite electronic blend
is now spun by the widest imaginable cross-section of DJs. He’s championed as much by Eric
Prydz, Angelo, Ingrosso & Axwell (also known as the Swedish House Mafia), as he is by Tiësto,
Armin Van Buuren and David Guetta. This casts Wippenberg as one of, if not, the most diverse
DJ/producer in today’s EDM universe.
In 2004 Wippenberg released the two ‘Elemental EPs’, which included the tracks ‘Fire’, ‘Water’,
‘Earth’ and ‘Air’. They drew strong support from the highest echelons of the DJ hierarchy and
pushed the Wippenberg name firmly into the headlines. The EPs release prompted close associates Cosmic Gate to collaborate with Wippenberg on their ‘Earth Mover’ album with the track ‘Guess Who’. Around the same time he completed work on his next single ‘Promised Land’, and with it came a new label relationship with Dutch heavyweight independent High Contrast Records. The track (which featured the vocals of Tiff Lacey and was remixed by Nic Chagall) beat the drum hard for what was to prove his renaissance record.
In 2008 ‘Chakalaka’ (partnered by the B-side ‘Drumster’) exploded into the clubbing consciousness, thanks in no small part to major 3 monthlong floor and radio hammering from Tiësto and Armin Van Buuren. As was always Wippenberg’s desire the tracks started to chip away at the stylistic borders of dance and came to enjoy heavy deck support from Sebastian Ingrosso, Eric Prydz, Eric Morillo and Dirty South, amongst a multitude of others. The track maintained a grip on the No.1 chart position on Beatport for an incredible 12 weeks. Late that year and branching further out still, Wippenberg launched a new nom-de-plume Sphaera. The tracks ‘Front & ‘Back’ were released on
Black Hole Records to, once again, broad DJ acclaim.
Famously, Wippenberg carved his name deep into the heart of the mid-90s dancefloor with his very
first track – the unforgettable, speaker-assaulting ‘Neurodancer’. Released on Hyper Hype, it
became an import smash and was picked up by Hooj Choons off-shoot Prolekult. To this day
‘Neurodancer’ rests as one of the hardest-to-find and most in-demand pieces of dance vinyl in the
world – regularly changing hands for many times its original price.
No Wippenberg biography would be complete without mention of Wippenberg’s remix and spinning work. Behind the decks his characteristic musical taste, which can be categorised into one certain genre, as he loves the freedom to mix different stlyes, has started to generate huge demand.
Meanwhile he is touring all around the world from Germany to Russia, from Australia to Brazil, even
the people of India or Qatar fell in love with the Wippenberg sound. It has seen him blaze a trail at
Europe’s leading festival events like Trance Energy, Mayday or Mysteryland and rock at Armin Van
Buuren’s ASOT400, as well as dozens of other, clubs, festivals and tent-poles events.
At the remix end of the mixing desk, Wippenberg has refashioned countless tracks of A-List
production outfits, like Sebastian Ingrosso’s MGMT ‘Kids’ sampling classic-tune „Kidsos“ and
Rank 1’s Trance Energy 2009 anthem ‘L.E.D. There Be Light’. But he also refined releases from
Tiësto, Tocadisco, Above & Beyond, Paul Van Dyk, Cosmic Gate, Gabriel & Dresden, and
Super8 & Tab. Most recently he remixed danish high-flyer Aura Dione’s new single „Song For
Sophie“ and gave her pop-ballade a classy progressive house outfit.
For his new single he teamed up with nobody else than Nic Chagall and Rank 1. Together they
created the track „100“ (which is also the 100th release of the label High Contrast). It has the typical
Rank 1 anthem signature, Nic Chagall’s progressive trance feeling and Wippenberg’s progressive
beats. Out on 14th June 2010, this is going to bet he next ueber-track from Wippenberg! Watch out!

Photo Tour: Fur Nightclub DC renovates outdoor patio

Just in time for the awesome spring weather, Fur Nightclub did some serious work on their patio. We dropped in last weekend for the first night of Life (formerly known as mnmlife), which is back in action on Saturday nights on the patio after the long winter hiatus. What we saw was pretty cool.
They added a full-length bar under the roof, complete with full hookah service, installed a large stage for outdoor shows, set up raised vip seating and tables, upgraded the sound system, and renovated the dj booth as well. With a fresh coat of paint and a few new lights, the last details were finished, bringing the space to life.
Together, the changes make the space into a much more meaningful and useful space. It draws the area together and gives it a reason for being there. The patio is now a real destination in the club, as opposed to being a place where people just go to smoke. We like it a lot, and can’t wait for the next Glow Saturday at Fur Nightclub.
Good job, Fur!

Some might caution the readiness and command of a twenty-two year old. They might call into question the lack of experience or credentials of such a young artist. Yet, with Shah Munir, better known as Shahz, such questions are quickly put to rest, and caution eliminated.
His resume reads like a seasoned veteran – from being showcased at esteemed venues such as 1 Oak, Avenue Greenhouse and Marquee in New York City, catering to the A-list crowds in LA, London and Dubai to collaborating with mega-stars from DJ AM, Felix Da Housecat, Fabolous and Sean Kingston, to DJ David Berrie, Maino, Dj Chachi, Wynter Gordon and Trey Songz and having corporate clients such as Cartier and Moet Chandon.
Such international performances and collaborations, as well as his unique talent to understand and adapt to both crowd and setting has made his reputation reverent and his nightly performances unprecedented. Rest assured, this young artist is on the way to achieving great lengths in his future endeavors.

From: UK
Style: techno
Famous Tracks:Lost, Superfly, 21st Century Ketchup, Out at Night, Sleepwalking, Carnival Kalimba, Femme Fatale, Tanov – Relevant (Steve Lawler Remix)
Best Known For: Hosting the legendary M42 Motorway raves when clubs wouldn’t let him spin as a youth. Leading the way in the UK techno movement. Never succumbing to the pressure to conform. Constant progression.
In a time when the music industry has risen to an all time high; where the swollen pockets of music executives have diluted quality; where the radio has become more vanilla than French ice cream; and the rise of internet distribution has allowed anyone, talented or not, to get their ‘art’ to the masses; Steve Lawler has remained all about the music.
His career has spanned nearly two decades and seen a teen from Birmingham go from throwing illegal parties under a highway to being crowned King of Space, Lawler has made it a point, no, an imperative necessity, to remain true to his forward thinking musical nature.
Now, nearly twenty years after he first threw the first of his legendary M42 motorway parties, Mr. Lawler is still pushing the boundaries of dance, performance and music.
“Performing is addictive, it’s a unique feeling, something that I will never get from anything else in my life. Sharing music that you are passionate about to an audience of people is magical for me.” – Steve Lawler
Experience the magic.
{tab=Bio}
Steve Lawler A child of the acid house generation, has been busy with the beats long
before genres were but a twinkle in clublandʼs eye. An electronic artist who defies generic
boundaries, ever since his days organising the infamous motor way raves under the M42
motor way, in the uk.
As an Artists his releases & Remixes have been signed by some of the worlds most
established Recording labels. R&S Records, Systematic, Drumcode, Harthouse, Cocoon,
MBF, OVUM, Sci+Tec, Tsuba, Souvenir, Rekids, Boxer Sport, Be As One, Monique,
Kostbar, Skint and of course his own recording label VIVa MUSiC.
As a Label Manager Steveʼs label VIVa MUSC (found in 2006), has quickly earnʼt a
reputation for breaking new talent and has featured tracks by such artists as Reboot,
Audiofly, Simon Baker, Jamie Jones, Davide Squillace, Luca Bacchetti, Bushwacka, Livio
& Roby, Dragosh, Leon, Plasmik, Ripperton, ilario Alicante, John Selway, Peace Division,

heavy patronage by many House & Techno luminaries.
As for A&R, just ask artists like Simon Baker, Audiofly, leon, Bearweasel and Livio & Roby
and theyʼll tell you all about the support, encouragement and opportunities Lawler has
given them.
VIVa MUSiC works as a culmination of everything thatʼs gone before; from the putting on
the aforementioned illegal raves, to his residency at super club Cream back in the mid
90ʼs. Heʼs remixed high profile artists such as Jamelia, Dido and Justin Timberlake and
worked with many of the worlds renowned dance imprints. As well as recording a track for
the blockbuster horror movie by Ian Softly ʻThe Skeleton Keyʼ. Heʼs released some of the
industryʼs most collectable mix series such as the ʻDark Drumsʼ ʻLights Outʼ and, most
recently, the ʻVIVaʼ series. Now on its 3rd release, the ʻVIVaʼ series has revealed Steveʼs
widescreen vision better than any mix before with down tempo and deep house playing a
big part in the beat blend.
Steve held a triumphant residency for nine years at the Balearic club Space in Ibiza (a club
he returned back to in 2008). His VIVa Nights residency where steve played from doors
open to door close at The End in London consistently sold out for its 7 years span and his
residency at Londonʼs Home Club was one of the infamous venueʼs only success stories.
Dynamic, driven and drastically obsessed with performing as well as he possibly can.
Steveʼs passion for House, Techno and Electronica is too strong for one simple generic
association, and right now his message is louder than ever. 18 years deep and Steve
Lawler isnʼt just at the top of his game, heʼs pushing the boundaries of what a DJ can do –
both technically and creatively – as an artist and as a successful label businessman.

Ultrabar nightclub quietly bans all douchebags

WASHINGTON DC — Earlier today, Ultrabar Nightclub became the first nightclub in the United States to take a stance against douchebags by specifically banning all douchebags from their premises, much to the excitement of clubgoers in the DC area. While common practice in European nightclubs, especially in France, the trend of formally banning douchebags has only recently gained traction in the United States. Most likely brought on with the surge in Jersey Culture and Guidos brought on by the rise of The Jersey Shore.
Darren Watkins, Chairman of the United States Clubber’s Association applauds Ultrabar‘s bold stance against douchebaggery, stating that “douchebags have always been a problem in nightclubs, and hopefully this will start the trend across the United States.”
Ultrabar made its stance very clear with an update to its club policies page, which states:
Effective 4/1/11: Management also reserves the right to refuse admission to any/all douchebags.
In a statement released earlier today, Ultrabar social media director Mark Maskell explains that this move was absolutely necessary to protect the interests of the customers, and to maintain the comfortable, and inviting atmosphere that Ultrabar is known for.
A March 2011 study commissioned by the DC Hospitality Group of 1,000 random female club patrons in DC indicated that nearly 35% of all female clubgoers top complaint is Douchebags. This is a spike from two years ago where the study showed that only 19% of clubgoing women in DC had problems with douchebaggery. Many respondents also wondered why the clubs just don’t ban them outright.

Alarmed by this sudden spike, Ultrabar decided to take immediate action, even though their club had the lowest douchebag count in all of the DC Nightclubs, at a very tolerable 1.14%. Maskell explains that the reason for this low number is that Ultrabar had quietly been turning douchebags away at the door for years. However, with the increased popularity of the club, douchebags were showing up in record numbers, just to be turned away. “It created quite a traffic jam, and wasted a lot of our staff resources that could’ve been spent on better customers.”
Ultrabar regular customer, a student from Sweden, supports Ultrabar’s decision. “I have been clubbing all over the world, and its nice to see that the anti-douchebag sentiment has spread to the United States as well, especially to my favorite club.”
However, despite the growing popularity worldwide, it has been difficult to get it moving here in DC. Many club owners are hesitant to turn douchebags away, for fear that they won’t have any customers left. Another local nightclub owner, who declined to give us his name for fear of losing his business, said “I wish we could ban these douchebags, they’re arrogant, they bother girls, and their strong cologne makes people vomit. But without them, I wouldn’t have any customers at all.”
And indeed, Ultrabar has already received some backlash from the DC douchebag community, with douches planning to boycott all DC nightclubs, not just Ultrabar. Brian Campbell, president of Douchebags United was outraged. “This discrimination is absolutely intolerable, especially here in the Nation’s Capital where so many millions have fought for their freedom from discrimination and hatred.”
Campbell explains that douchebags have the right to hit on everything that moves, grab girls butts, act like they are superior, start fights, tip poorly, and act like a baller. Campbell comfirms this saying “We do whatever the hell we want, and the constitution protects it.”

My interview with Campbell was interrupted at that moment when an attractive young lady walked in to Barcode, the restaurant/lounge where we were talking during their infamous Extended Happy Hour. He raced over to her, grabbed her by the waist, threw down a pathetic pick-up line, flexed his muscles, and laid down his best rap. When the woman’s husband walked in three seconds later, Campbell puffed up and gave the husband a dirty look and grabbed the wife’s behind defiantly. When the husband shook his head in disgust, Campbell ran over to the bar, cut in line, elbowed a girl in the face, spilled his drink on two people, punched a baby, left no tip, and began clucking like a chicken at the husband.
Barcode Manager Arman Amirshahi had seen enough, and grabbed Campbell by the collar, lifted him off the ground, and literally threw him out. Amirshahi just shook his head, “Douchebag.”
Perhaps this bold move will send a message to douchebags across Washington DC: You’re not welcome here anymore.

The Experts Have Decided: DC Nightlife’s 10 Hottest Clubs
Washington DC nightclubs, bars and lounges are a playground for recording artists, politicians, students, athletes, tourists and more. Overshadowed by destinations like NY, LA and Miami, it’s easy to see how DC nightlife has flown under the radar. However, many of the world’s biggest names party in and return to The District.
We’ve popped bottles with Drake, done shots with FC Barcelona, had David Guetta name Glow the best party in the world, gotten ‘Lost’ with Miles and Frank Lapidus, done happy hour with Donald Rumsfeld, the list goes on. With the third largest college population in the nation, the DC crowd knows how to get down.
In no particular order:
Echostage is an all-purpose concert venue built to host large-scale productions. The venue is one massive room with elongated bars, VIP mezzanines, a photo pit, etc. Everything you would expect at a live venue. It’s the largest nightlife concert hall in DC.
With its doors opening in September 2012, the Echostage schedule has already featured the top 3 DJs in the world in Armin van Buuren, Tiesto and Avicii as well as Hip-Hop and Dancehall stars Big Sean and Beenie Man.
See our complete overview of Echostage

Minted in the fourth quarter of 2010, Barcode is a venue that moves with the customer. A typical day goes something like lunch, happy hour, dinner, party. The kitchen is open every day until midnight and features trusted American classics with a twist. The bar features extensive beer and wine menus as well as specialty drinks balancing homemade syrups, fresh citrus and floral essences. Barcode is geared towards young professionals (and older) who aren’t quite ready to let go of the care-free life.

U-Hall, as it is affectionately know, is an underground DJ and concert venue that focuses on the music. No bottle service, no state of the art light system, no bells, no whistles. The sound system is one of the best in DC nightlife. Featuring DJ acts in the evening spinning techno, dubstep, moombahton and underground house; and live acts early doing indy, punk, samba, rap, big band and more; U-Hall caters to the ‘be yourself and let loose’ kind of crowd.

Named after Napoleon’s wife, Josephine is a study in VIP grandeur. The K-Street hot spot’s pampered party-goers enjoy first-class table service, the infamous Pit (a sunken dance-floor with VIP tables lining the edges) as well as the Gold Room in the back.
Whether it’s a Latin, Nightlife Industry, Hip-Hop or EDM crowd, one thing is certain – the people look good and the liquor flows like water.

Public is the king of DC sports bars. The former club Five space has been artfully transformed to a sports lover’s paradise. With a reckless amount of TV’s, projectors and various floors, Public is the choice to watch NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, boxing, UFC and NCAA events.
It’s also a great place to go out too, with DJ’s spinning dance and top 40 long after the game has ended. Hungry? Public offers a varied menu and a great selection of beer, plus a monthly rotation of 4 new regional beers on draft.
Combine all that with a great rooftop patio, and you have a bar heavyweight! There’s no way that your group won’t have a good time; day or night.

His mixes are killer, his productions are bangin’, and his skills are unquestionable. Enferno is the master of the beat, and electrifies the dancefloor wherever he goes. Whether is a small nightclub or a massive stadium with 75,000+ people, Enferno lights it up!
Now he returns to his old stomping grounds to rip it up once again! So get the old crew together and come out to party at Ultrabar Nightclub DC!
David Berrie (Chroma)
Just signed to Ultra Records, David Berrie has been blowing up the club scene across the United States and around the world! From his humble beginnings as a basement DJ, he’s come a long way. Today he’s playing at huge clubs like Tao, Webster Hall, and Liv Miami. He plays for major corporations like GQ and Vogue, and rubs elbows with Diddy, Kanyke, 50 Cent, and more.
The son of famous toy manufacturer Russell Berrie, David grew up with the opportunity to do anything he wanted… including nothing. He took piano and violin lessons early on, eventually landing at something a bit cooler, turntables.
Inspired by NY icons like Louie Vega, Danny T, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul; by 16 Berrie had honed his skills and was sneaking out of the house to spin at small clubs in Manhattan. From there it was cake.
Been There, Done That: Having performed events for Diddy, Giselle, GQ and Esquire, Berrie’s inner talent eventually came bursting out. With all that instrumental training and all that NY influence, it was only a matter of time before he traded the posh VIP scene for the infectious, let it all hang out world of electronic dance music.
