Saam’s Corner | Fear The Flag

Saam ProfileOk kiddies, today’s blog is actually not going to focus on music. The next edition of Saam’s corner will be about hip hop and feature a new top 10. Last night after watching Maryland unveil one of their many new uniforms, I was inspired to change my blog and write about this.

For the first time in my life, I am proud to be a terrapin!

Forget the $75 tickets I would get when I would park behind regents for 30 seconds, forget the campus security coming into my apartment and stealing my weed, forget 22 year old TA’s with a chip on their shoulder trying to hold you back from graduating on time, and let’s all definitely forget about the traffic on Route 1 THAT’S NEVER GOT BETTER. As you can see, me and Maryland had our issues in the past, but after monday night, I’m willing to look the other way. On a serious note, I think my parking tickets exceeded my tuition cost per semester 🙁

When the 2011-2012 Maryland Terrapins took the field on monday night at Byrd Stadium, they sent a message to the entire country. They emphatically announced that we are a school enriched with tradition, they told the country that we are innovative and they told the country that WE ARE MARYLAND! We bleed red, black, yellow and white. The uniform on our players represent our student body, our dedication to our athletic department, and the commitment to the university.

After the firing of one of the most successful head coaches of our football program and the forced resignation (I don’t care what you think GARY WAS FORCED OUT) of our only basketball coach who brought a national championship to this school, this University needed to be put on the map. Those uniforms were not for the 45 year old Maryland Alumnus who has season tickets. Those uniforms were for the 10 year who lives in Silver Spring who aspires to go to be a terp. Those uniforms were for the 17 year old high school senior who is undecided about which school to go to. Those uniforms were for the student body at the University who needed some form of tradition. Now, is it a lock that undecided high school seniors or kid who saw that game would want to go to Maryland now? Absolutely not. But if you see all the polls asking the Maryland student body what they thought of the jerseys, I guarantee you that the overwhelming majority approved of it.

Aside from the debut of new head coach Randy Edsall and the team’s victory over the University of Miami, what this uniform change did was that it bought this team a longer life cycle on this victory. Instead of people talking about this game till noon on Tuesday, #marylandjersey is still trending on twitter 2 days after. Brilliant marketing move terps! I saw more Sportscenter analysis on tuesday morning about how much Lebron James disliked the Maryland Uniforms than the debut of Stephen Strasburg. PS, What does Lebron James know about what COLLEGE UNIFORMS should look like anyway? THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT. You uneducated BUM! The only schooling you’ve received in the last 7 years was provided by the Boston Celtics, The San Antonio Spurs, and most recently, Dirk Nowitzki.

Maryland, I applaud you. Thank you for telling the country that we are MARYLAND. What this tells me is that for the first time in a long time, we are a school enriched in tradition, full of life, and have a student body that supports one another.

P.S. Lebron James, the only #ewwwwww that’s trending is your 4th quarter performances. #crunchtimefail
