BIOGRAPHY(via www.machinegunkelly.com)

There’s nothing like someone who has lived your story and Ohio’s MC MGK resilience has become a beacon of hope for thousands of kids across America. Penning rhymes about everything from addiction to family issues, MGK is a symbol of relentless perseverance to his fans and the MC is about to begin the next chapter of his already successful career.

Born Colson Baker in Houston, Texas, MGK lived almost a dozen places, including Egypt, before moving to Denver, Colorado with his father after his mother began a new life with a new man.

“I don’t have a relationship with my mom, she left when I was nine years old,” says MGK.

In Denver, the Bakers lived with MGK’s aunt. Though the father and son had each other, they couldn’t lay claim to much else. As his dad fought depression and unemployment, the young MC split his time between wearing two school outfits and being bullied by the neighborhood kids.

“I used to stand out because I was tall and I couldn’t really fight back then,” says MGK. “Then I got tired of getting beat up so I started fighting people with my words instead.”

In seventh grade, MGK found solace in rhyming after watching DMX’s “We Right Here” video.

“DMX is a huge influence on me because neither of us have siblings so we had to fight a lot of dark shit by ourselves,” says MGK.

And though he “wasn’t popular at all,” the lanky kid was good at battling his middle school challengers. Later, while attending Denver’s Thomas Jefferson High School, his father moved to Kuwait to work for the army and left MGK behind to live in a neighbor’s basement. It was then the teen began experimenting with drugs and recorded his first demo tape.

“It was terrible, but I thought it was cool,” says MGK, with a smile.

Without supervision, MGK stopped attending school and like 50 Cent, the high school freshmen, made a name for himself by calling out elder classmates. In 2005, his father moved MGK to Kuwait, where the teen got into even more trouble. Eventually, the pair were forced back stateside and settled in Cleveland, Ohio. While attending Shaker Heights High on the city’s east side, MGK convinced a local t-shirt shop owner, who doubled as an MC manager, to take him under his wing.

“I got the name Machine Gun Kelly because of my rapid-fire delivery when I was 15 and started doing shows,” says MGK.

Nicknamed MGK by his fans, the MC released his first mixtape Stamp of Approval in 2006 and built a local fan base performing at Cleveland venues like Hi-Fi. But it was a trip to New York’s famed Apollo Theater in 2009 that really gave him his start.

“We drove straight from Ohio and stood in line for ten hours,” recalls MGK. “I got boo’d as soon as I walked on the Apollo stage and then I won … twice.”

The energetic performer became the first rapper in history to win the Apollo’s talent show. MGK’s mixtape 100 Words And Running came shortly after and he created a high school promotional tour, where he performed to such excited crowds that school security teams began turning him away to keep the peace. And while the MC’s catchphrase, “Lace up,” which started as a mixtape interlude, became a call to arms for fans, their leader was still flipping burritos at Chipotle to pay his rent. After graduating high school, MGK’s father kicked him out of their home and forced the young MC to fend for himself. Not long after, an 18 year-old MGK welcomed his own child, a daughter named Casie. The infant gave the rapper new incentive to work even harder and he soon earned a nod for Best Midwest Artist at the 2010 Underground Music Awards and his “Alice in Wonderland” clip won Best Music Video at the 2010 Ohio Hip-Hop Awards.

But just as his star began to rise, MGK suffered a new setback. A polyp developed on his vocal chord which kept him offstage and out of the studio for six months. Without health insurance for surgery, MGK worked off the polyp by himself with tireless vocal exercises.

“Every night I’d wake up at 4 o’clock in the morning wanting to blow my brains out,” says MGK. “That was one of the most depressing periods of my life.”

But the sun shone again with the 2010 release of MGK’s Lace Up mixtape. The project not only earned the local favorite more fans baring their own “Lace Up” tattoos but a national audience. In 2011, the Ohio rapper secured a label deal with Diddy’s Bad Boy Records/ Interscope Records as well as a marketing partnership to score a spot for HTC’s Rezound Beats By Dre phone. Machine Gun MGK’s “Invincible” track plays during the electronics commercial, the release of which coincided with the song’s sale on iTunes.

In October, the Rage Pack mixtape, inspired by his energy on stage and a love for his fans, hit the web. A video for MGK’s single “Wild Boy” featuring Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame and produced by GB Hitz followed, leading MGK to win MTV’s Hottest Breakthrough MC for 2011.

“To be considered for the hottest breakthrough MC of 2011, it’s obviously an honor, but I want to be the hottest,” he told MTV News. “I’ve never been comfortable with sharing anything.”

Gearing up for his mainstream spotlight, MGK is currently prepping his official EP via Bad Boy/ Interscope entitled Lace Up. Slated to hit shelves in March, the Ohio native will take his new music across the United States during the record-breaking “90 Cities in 99 Days” tour with Midwest MC Tech N9ne also beginning that month. In addition, MGK’s secured a performance on this summer’s Vans Warped Tour line-up.

Already acknowledged by cultural gatekeepers like The New York Times, MTV, The FADER and Nah Right, MGK is ready to devour the next phase of his career. Lace up

Thomas Wesley Pentz, better known as Diplo, is unquestionably one of the most dynamic forces in music today. He is as much as an international brand (tastemaker, spokesman, curator) as he is a musician/DJ/producer. Year after year, he’s proven himself to be an ubiquitous cultural figure, consistently bridging high and low, mainstream and underground, with remarkable tact and reverence.

In 2005, Diplo founded label/culture lab Mad Decent to serve as a showcasing platform for the myriad of fascinating sounds Pentz encounters while touring the world. The early release of Brazilian group Bonde do Role remains a testament to Diplo’s aspirations, as their music helped define Baile Funk in the United States. Mad Decent has gone on to release music from a dynamic range of artists that include Santigold, Peter Bjorn & John, Rusko, Crookers, Bosco Delrey, Lil’ Jon, Gucci Mane, Buraka Som Sistema, Dillon Francis, RiFF RAFF, Baauer and Major Lazer. Coming full circle from his days of Hollertronix, Diplo has also utilized the label to produce the annual and infamous Mad Decent block parties – a series of outdoor dance parties/concerts that now span 22 cities across North America.

Diplo is truly a jack of all trades – he’s contributed to Vanity Fair, yields regular radio shows on BBC Radio 1 and Clear Channel Media stations, modeled for the campaign of fashion designer Alexander Wang, released the coffee table book 128 Beats Per Minute and the documentary film, Favela On Blast, and most recently had a cameo role in 22 Jump Street and stars as the host of the ?uestlove-produced VH1 show, SoundClash. Diplo is a dynamic and self-driven spirit with interests that span far beyond any singular culture or musical realm; he is truly the 21st century artist.

Once dubbed “the Jay-Z of the South” by Pharrell Williams, T.I. gradually came into his own and established himself as one of rap’s most successful MCs during the early 2000s. Like Jay-Z, T.I. — born Clifford Harris in Atlanta, Georgia — carried a balance of smoothness and toughness, and although 2001’s I’m Serious didn’t shoot him out of the gate à la Reasonable Doubt, he consistently grew and launched a string of major hits with 2003’s “24’s.” Throughout the six following years, T.I. maintained a consistent presence on urban radio stations in America: 2003’s Trap Muzik, 2004’s Urban Legend, 2006’s King (released in tandem with T.I.’s debut screen appearance in ATL), 2007’s T.I. vs T.I.P., and 2008’s Paper Trail — all released through the MC’s deal with Atlantic — were Top Ten albums, with the latter three even spending time at the very top of the chart.

For better or for worse, T.I. also courted a good deal of controversy during his rise to superstar status. Far more ink was spent on his legal issues and conflicts with other rappers, including fellow Southerner Lil’ Flip, than his Katrina relief efforts and other humanitarian involvements. One notable event occurred on May 3, 2006, when T.I.’s crew was caught up in a shooting after a show in Cincinnati. The crossfire left three people injured, while longtime friend and personal assistant Philant Johnson was fatally wounded. Despite such incidents, T.I. continued to flourish as the decade drew to a close, releasing three chart-topping rap singles and four Top Five pop hits between 2008 and 2009. His career took a breather in 2009, however, when the rapper entered an Arkansas prison to serve a year-long sentence related to federal gun charges. He was released from prison at the end of 2009, serving the rest of his sentence at a halfway house in Atlanta. Just prior to the December 2010 release of his seventh album, No Mercy, he returned to prison, sentenced to 11 months for violating his probation. The album went gold, and the rapper was nominated for two Grammy awards. After his release, he continued recording and co-starred in the VH1 series T.I. and Tiny: The Family Hustle. He issued Trouble Man: Heavy Is the Head, in December 2012. Influenced by Pharrell, the rapper moved to the Columbia family of labels in 2013. Pharrell also executive produced his 2014 effort Paperwork, an album introduced by the single “About the Money” featuring guest artist Young Thug. (courtesy of MTV.com)

Austin Santos (born December 23, 1986), better known by his stage name Arcangel, is a Dominican singer-songwriter, . He was born in New York and moved to Puerto Rico some years later. While living in Puerto Rico, he would eventually form part of a popular then-underground reggaeton act, Arcangel & De La Ghetto. The duo eventually went on to make songs that became popular among reggaeton fans in the United States and other countries including Puerto Rico, including “Agresivo”, “Sorpresa” and “Mi Fanática” during the mid-2000s. Arcangel went on to release his debut studio album, El Fenómeno, in late 2008. The album included songs that were produced in 2008, as well as the DJ Nelson produced “Chica Virtual”, which was produced in 2007. Half of the album also included newly produced tracks, ones including “Pa’ Que la Pases Bien” and “Por Amar a Ciegas”, which went on to become successful airplay songs on American Latin Urban radio stations across the United States. Also in other countries as well as the United States. Arcangel has success very fast by the help of various artist such as De La Ghetto, Daddy Yankee, Zion & Lenox and much more. His first debut album was a successful album because of it’s success in his solo career. The album top many charts in the U.S and Latin America.

Arcangel was born in Bronx, NY. He was born eldest of three children to Dominican mother and Dominican Father. His mother was a former member of the all-women merengue group, Las Chicas del Can, who were popular during the early 1980s to the late 1990s. Martínez Tutek, Andrés (2009-03-04). “Arcangel: el irreverente del reggaetón” (in Spanish). People en Español (Time Inc.). He grew up listening to various types of music and has been a fan of rock music, particularly Robi Draco Rosa, a Puerto Rican pop rock artist and a former member of Menudo. Arcangel was not always a fan of reggaeton; he claims that it is not his favorite type of music, but it is easy to sing to. During the early 2000s, Arcangel grew fond of the new kind of music. Listening to artists like Tego Calderón, Tempo, and Daddy Yankee, it inspired him to pursue a singing and rapping career in reggaeton music.

After moving to Puerto Rico in 2002, Arcangel decided to follow in the footsteps of the upbringing of reggaeton music. He went on to form an underground reggaeton duo, Arcangel & De La Ghetto. The duo was signed to reggaeton singer-songwriter Zion Baby Records from making continuos hits for Zion’s record label, Baby Records, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group. The duo were also involved with Machete Music in 2004 during the time that they were recording for reggaeton compilation albums. Arcangel & De La Ghetto rose to fame in 2006 on the reggaeton compilation album hosted by Héctor “El Father”, Sangre Nueva, with their hit song, “Ven y Pegate.” They were also featured on the Luny Tunes-hosted compilation Mas Flow: Los Benjamins in 2006.

Though an active musical duo, Arcangel & De La Ghetto never released a studio album since the formation of the duo. Any production they had been involved with only resulted in tracks and recordings being included on compilation albums or leaked onto the Internet. This was due to a conflict with Baby Records because the company was not releasing any material by Arcangel & De La Ghetto onto an album of their own. Arcangel claimed to have even spent $150,000 on producing an album, which resulted in the label not releasing it to market. The tracks produced were said to have been leaked onto the Internet instead. Arcangel had then filed a lawsuit with Baby Records in 2007 for US$1,000,000 and would eventually leave the record company in December 2006, when he announced that he was embarking on a solo career and founding a label of his own.

After the separation of the duo in 2007, Arcangel went on to perform solo, working with various reggaeton producers and performers on compilation albums. Most notable of them was a compilation album produced in 2007, Flow la Discoteka 2, which was produced by songwriter and record producer DJ Nelson. The album was an upbringing of different artists trying to rise to fame, one of those including Arcangel, who made a track titled “Chica Virtual”, which went on to be one of his most recognizable songs, as well as being a popular airplay single on American Latin Urban radio stations, charting at number 9 on the Billboard Latin Rhythm Airplay chart. It also charted at number 22 on the Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart.

Since the departure from the duo, as well as his former record label Baby Records, Arcangel originally decided to release his debut studio album titled La Maravilla in early 2008. The decision to release the album, however, was cancelled due to the album being leaked onto the Internet during Spring 2008. The tracks were distributed through his official website and file sharing sites relating to reggaeton under the title La Maravilla. One of the internet leaks, a song titled “Pa’ Que la Pases Bien”, went on to be a popular airplay track on American Latin Urban radio stations across the United States. The unreleased album being leaked onto the internet resulted in making Arcangel more popular among reggaeton fans in the United States, as well as Puerto Rico. HE had made many songs by then until they were leaked on to the internet which helped his fame.

Arcangel founded Flow Factory Inc. in 2008, and his mother became his manager afterward. He claimed that it was easier having his mother be his manager so that he would not have to pay 20 percent of money received from record sales to his record label and manager. He went on to release his debut album, El Fenómeno, in late 2008. The album included songs that were produced in the last quarter of 2007 and the first quarter of 2008, including the DJ Nelson produced “Chica Virtual”. Half of the album was comprised of tracks that he originally produced for an album that was to be released in the first quarter of 2008. The other half of the album also included newly produced tracks, ones including “Por Amar a Ciegas”, which went on to become a successful airplay single on American Latin Urban radio stations across the United States.

In mid-January 2009, Arcangel announced plans of a European tour sometime during 2009, in promotion of his debut album, El Fenómeno, and to receive more exposure across the world from reggaeton fans. To comment on the tour, he claimed that in order for it to be successful, good equipment would be highly important, and by going along with the tour, he will be able to learn more on what the continental tour experience is like. Arcangel confirmed to be touring in several countries, including Germany, France, Portugal, Spain, England, Netherlands and Denmark. Arcangel released some tracks in 2009 like Movimiento Violento,Si Te Pegas Featuring John Jay, No Me Digas Que No Featuring Lenzo and Se Va. Also Arcangel performed a song with Vico C named Sentimiento, this is the first single of the new album of Vico named Babilla. He Has Also Sang Some Songs With Daddy Yankee Like “Pasion”. Hopefully his upcoming mixtapes and albums will help his singing career. Arcangel was butaly hit in the face by “Hector” El father in a concert in Puerto Rico.

In 2008, Arcangel starred in the independently-produced film Muerte en El Paraíso, which told the story of two brothers who make it into the music industry, but are swindled by two record company executives. The film was directed by Abimael Acosta and opened on March 5, 2008 in selected theaters. In the film, Arcangel starred as “Kalil”, one of the brothers who was new to the music industry. The film was distributed by independent film company, Producciones Nuevo-Enfoque, and was produced by Jeancarlo Rodríguez and Doel Alicea. Critics called the film plot to be somewhat similar to the idea of the 2008 film Talento de Barrio, a film starring Puerto Rican reggaeton recording artist Daddy Yankee. Though both films were completely different in production, both recording artists were said to have enjoyed the filming experience. Both Arcangel and Daddy Yankee are reggeaton artists. Arcangel was also featured in one of the songs of Daddy Yankee’s album Talento de Barrio.

His greatest success came to him after a trip to Cuba, where he was inspired to write La Flaca which became the title of his first album in 1996. A year later came the big surprise: millions of albums were sold around the world, and “La Flaca” became the song of the summer in 1997.

After this great success on his first album, Pau was determined to show that the band would not be a one-hit wonder, and with this idea he launched Depende (1998), which was produced by Joe Dworniak in Moody Studios in London over a period of two months. This album featured collaborations with the likes of Ketama and continued with Jarabe de Palo’s ironic and ingenious lyrics, which managed to connect with the Hispanic public and even made inroads among Italians.

In 2001 they released De vuelta y vuelta, their most conceptual album. It showed a change in the band with the first music video of the album, in which Pau appears shaving his head, shedding his long-haired features. This album featured collaborations with the likes of Antonio Vega, Jovanotti, Vico C and Celia Cruz.

In 2003 the band tried to show a change to more positive songs with their album Bonito, which featured the likes of Los Mártires del Compás, the singer-songwriter Elena Andujar and their Italian friend Jovanotti.

In autumn of 2004 the band announced that they would go on tour with their new album, 1 m2 (Un metro cuadrado (A Square Meter)) featuring the likes of Jorge Drexler, Lucrecia, and Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders).

The group has received great awards such as Premios de la Música, Premio Ondas, and Grammy nominations. They have collaborated with La Vieja Trova Santiaguera, Antonio Vega, Vico C and Celia Cruz (soundtrack of El milagro de P. Tinto). Pau has also composed tracks for Ricky Martin and starred in a music video with Alanis Morissette.

Jarabe is a syrup, and is usually used when talking about medicine (cough syrup is jarabe de tos). Palo is a stick. The expression means to “cure” someone by giving them a beating – e.g. saying that a child who is acting up needs jarabe de palo.
