DC Mayor to Extend Weekend Liquor Sales
More Than Just Politics
DC Mayor looks to add hour to last call on weekends.
District of Colombia Mayor Vincent Gray recently proposed his 2013 budget plan for the city of Washington.
In trying to avoid tax increases and service cuts, the $10M plan would raise an extra $5.3M by passing a law allowing DC bars, restaurants, lounges and nightclubs to serve alcohol until 4AM on weekends.
More Money for DC
More Press for District Entertainment & Nightlife
With “The Most Powerful City in the World” for a nickname, it’s difficult to imagine getting more press for the US capital. While politics will always be king, the Washington DC Nightlife and Entertainment community is thriving.
Live Nation venues like Warner Theater and the recently opened Fillmore Silver Spring bring world renowned music and comedy acts weekly. Productions like Fela!, Come Fly Away and more show regularly at Sidney Harmon Hall, the world famous Kennedy Center and other DC theater venues. The city is known amongst jazz and blue fans throughout America as the birthplace of the legendary Duke Ellington.
The above-mentioned activities however, are generally closed by Midnight.
Washington DC restaurants, lounges, bars and nightclubs provide invaluable revenue for The District primarily through sales tax on liquor. American nightlife meccas such as New York, Miami and Las Vegas not only have extended hours, they are also recognized as international destinations. Tourism thrives in these cities in part due to their ability to offer late night activities.
Allowing Washington DC nightlife venues to remain open until 4AM on weekends will create fresh buzz for a city dominated in the news by politics.
An extension of liquor sales on the weekends would cascade to the food, transportation, safety and tourism industries to name a few; and create more jobs in a rebuilding economy.

Nightlife entrepreneurs feel the extra hour will serve more than just their own business interests.
“It’ll be a tremendous boom for the DC economy; providing much needed revenue without effort from the government, or extra taxes on residents. Not only will it be generating more tax revenue, it will also generate more money in terms of salaries for nightlife employees and police details,”
– Panorama Productions owner Antonis Karagounis
DC council members concerned with stability and public rowdiness issues made the following comments:
“We don’t want any of that. We don’t want a Bourbon Street atmosphere.”
“Any suggestions about changing hours of alcohol sales will be met with concerns.”
“… concerned about people in cars, out later at night, drinking for longer periods.”
We feel it’s unfair to equate a 4AM last call with turning DC into one massive Bourbon Street party. The infamous New Orleans party destination is home to bars, restaurants, strip clubs and souvenir shops. All Mayor Grey wants is an extra hour at the bar.
We agree that there are issues that need to be addressed, but being out late in and of itself is not an argument against anything. People driving drunk is a concern whether it’s lunch time, happy hour, dinner or beyond.
Do the Pros Outweigh the Cons?
If DC nightlife is granted an extra hour to serve alcohol on Friday and Saturday nights, it will potentially pay for over half of the Mayor’s proposed budget for 2013. If not from liquor sales tax, where will the money come from? Would you rather pay more taxes out of your pocket? Or would you rather have an extra hour at the bar and let the clubs pay to keep DC great?

Fujimar: Late-Night Sushi & Ceviche in Washington DC
1401 K Street,
Home of Lima Lounge Welcomes Fujimar

Take an open second floor space,
infuse Latin and Asian flavors.
Mix Sake and Tequila. Sushi and Ceviche.
Drop some downtempo music.
Here is DC’s newest Restaurant
and evening seafood bar.
Fujimar is the product of combining and renovating Lima Restaurant and Vetro Lounge. Focusing solely on the culinary experience, the second level of Lima Lounge has adopted a more open layout, added a drink bar, sushi bar, and created a menu drizzled in Japanese-South American fusion.
While Lima Lounge remain’s one of DC’s top nightlife destinations, Fujimar will become a choice amongst DC foodies for sushi, ceviche and select items from the former Lima Restaurant menu.
Entering Fujimar from the familiar entrance at 1401 K St. NW, patrons are greeted by an inviting, modern layout. Stainless steel accents at the new drink bar compliment the hardwood floors. Comfortably firm white leather couches, chic velvet-like chairs, minimalist table seating washed by a chroma light display creates a relaxed, high-end atmosphere. Moving further inside, large HDTVs add to the ambience while stone-top tables fit for kings await.
The menu features a combination of Asian and Latin food without the standard con-“fusion” experienced at similar style restaurants. Fujimar instead recreates the unique culinary experience achieved only when two foreign cuisines blend naturally. The result is an interpretation of cuisine forged when Asian immigrants relocated to Latin America.
These inspirations will result in a menu of sushi and ceviche alongside a selection of fish (including unusual options such as Tasmanian Kin Salmon, and Hapu’up’u), caught and shipped the same day from Hawaiian waters.
Owner Masoud Aboughaddareh ensures the fish will be “hooked, line-caught or speared by divers within American waters to ensure strict fishing regulations” and “chosen with great care, knowledge and sensitivity
for preserving the environmental heritage of the world’s most coveted seafood.” Other options such as braised short ribs and barbecued chicken with butter and soy sauce will be available as well.
Fujimar’s drink menu features wine list with imports by artisan winemakers, an extensive Saki collection and a hand-crafted beverage program. No thirst will go unquenched.
Sushi and ceviche served until 1AM M-Th and 2am F/S enhance an already gratifying experience. Fujimar hopes to infuse something fresh into DC restaurants and the K Street neighborhood.

- Atmosphere: Dimly lit, 2 bars, upstairs/downstairs, lounge and restaurant in the thick of trendy Dupont Circle. When it comes to DC lounges, One has all the buzz. Actors and athletes alike have been spotted relaxing in the low key spot. It feels slightly shady walking in, like there’s ‘some sh*t’ going down. And who knows, maybe there is. If you’re looking for a nice place to bring a girl and need something better than a hookah bar in AdMo, this is your spot. It’s a great place to have a nice, low key, potentially wild night with a group.
Venue Overview
An unassuming restaurant-front in Dupont Circle, an outdoor patio welcomes guests to One Lounge in Washington DC. Walking down a small set of stairs and down a narrow hallway, guests find themselves entering a rather intimate restaurant/lounge. On the left side of the entry hall is a long rectangular room with couches, tables and a very classic lounge vibe. To the right of the entry is a bar and around the corner to the right, a dining area.

Turning the corner from the front-bar you’ll find a small nook with couches, an open room with a DJ booth that connects to the left-side, and a staircase. Upstairs is a private room with bar, Persian rugs, leather armchairs, the whole nine.
Parties
Tuesday: Live Jazz is featured with strings, bass and vocals in an environment where talking and listening are both ideal.
Wednesday: Guest bartenders and great music make this a fun mid week hangout for locals, regulars and people in the restaurant biz. Both bars open.
Thursday: Ladies Night. An all-star female staff rusn things and gives away free bubbly after 10pm to all ladies at both bars.
Friday: The House Party combines the homely nature of One Lounge and House Music until 3am. Both bars are open.
Saturday: Party Night. Saturdays we are usually filled with Special Events like yours and there is always a great mix of people and music on both floors.
Sunday/Monday: The folks at One Lounge are always hanging out, so come in for a relaxed night and food until 1AM.

About Chuck Levin’s Washington Music Center
Chuck Levin’s Washington Music Center was founded in 1960 by Chuck and Marge Levin. The store was originally located at 12th and H Streets in downtown Washington, D.C. In April of 1968, that location destroyed due to fire in the riots of that same year, following the assassination of Martin Luther King. Two months later, operations resumed at the current location on Veirs Mill Road in Wheaton, Maryland.
Washington Music Center (popularly known as “Chuck’s”) occupies four warehouses and separate repair facilities in close proximity to the main store, as well as state of the art Pro Sound and Home Keyboard showrooms in a building adjacent to the main store. Chuck’s is truly a family operation, and a great deal of our success is directly attributed to the close working relationship of this family. In recent years, the original founders’ two sons, Alan and Robert, have taken over stewardship of the company.
Washington Music Center’s reputation for customer service, competitive pricing, large inventory, reliability, integrity, honesty, dependability, personal attention to details, good will, quality, and customer satisfaction remains unsurpassed by anyone in the retail music industry. For these reasons, Chuck’s has continued to grow and prosper continuously each and every year since it’s inception, winning top sales awards from several of the biggest manufacturers in the music industry. We couldn’t do it without a loyal customer base, and for this you have our utmost gratitude. Thanks everybody!
