The 90s Boom Could Last Forever

Don’t think for a second that millions of viral Youtube video clips of people dancing a version of the Running Man dance to R & B hits, pop acts like Duran Duran and 98 Degrees reuniting and playing 20 tour dates in August 2016 alone, MTV program Daria resurfacing, Pokemon being the world’s most popular video game and Mariah Carey seductively posing on the cover of mainstream magazines are five unrelated events from the past three months. In fact, they’re connected by the fact that they prove that the 1990s and retro culture in general are incredibly popular right now. In presenting facts, figures and thinking about what the future may hold, we’ll get a sense of why love for the 1990s could possibly not be just a trend, but rather, the start of a phenomenon that lasts forever.

Recently, Viacom has swapped brands and concepts on it’s “classic” music channel. VH1 Classic is now MTV Classic, and is not just focusing on throwback content in general from the Viacom family of music networks. Instead, the new MTV Classic is specifically ‘90s focused, with MTV President Sean Atkins noting that “MTV’s [‘90s] programming vault is a music and pop culture goldmine with universal resonance.”

Photo via tinypic.com
Photo via tinypic.com

‘90s music reaching “goldmine” status should be obvious by now, but to break the trend down by simple numbers, overall music sales in the 1990s rose roughly 75%, while in the years since 2000, overall sales have dipped 64%. If you’re NOT looking for numbers as proof, ask yourself just how quickly you specifically downloaded and paid $20 for the Tidal app *just* to hear Prince’s feel-good hits from the 1990s after he unexpectedly passed away.

Photo via telegraph.co.uk
Photo via telegraph.co.uk

Nostalgic feelings for the 1990s are not just limited to music. In 1996, the top five comedies on free television were watched in 54 million homes. Comparatively, in 2014, there were only three comedies in the top 30 TV programs on free television, and these programs were viewed by 27 million households. Clearly, while there’s certainly more broadcasting options than ever before, the ratings also show that people could easily want to watch ‘90s TV shows again. Need proof? 1996’s top-ranked comedy was Seinfeld, and famously, the streaming broadcast rights for the show were sold to Hulu last year for $160 million. That’s a lot of puffy shirts.

Discussing music again, there’s also the idea to consider that for every modern day Drake and Kanye that become superstars, that we’re not comparatively creating the seemingly never-ending list of ‘90s rap stars that include Biggie, Tupac, LL Cool J, Puff Daddy, Busta Rhymes, Dre and Snoop, Meth and Red, and so many more.

Here’s a quick number to drive home that point. There’s a group of 11 artists who had #1 singles for 42% of the 1990s. By comparison, there’s 11 artists who have had #1 singles in the 2010s, but for 71% — or nearly twice as long. This definitely allows for fewer options to break through as superstars.

In 20 years, imagine say, Desiigner, going on a sold out tour like the 1990s-beloved 98 Degrees, “I Love The ‘90s” Tour participants Salt-N-Pepa, Kid ‘N Play, Vanilla Ice and Coolio, “90sFest” Tour headliners Smash Mouth, Sugar Ray, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Spin Doctors, or say, current Billboard pop chart toppers Blink-182. It’s safe to say that a nostalgia tour where “Panda” and “Timmy Turner” are played on repeat probably will not happen.

What happens when fewer records sell, modern entertainment isn’t so entertaining, there are fewer current superstars and people want fun experiences more than ever before? People literally start doing the Running Man again. Exactly.

The ‘90s boom is not a joke. Instead, it’s a sign of things to come, and things that also may last forever. Now, imagine if there were a club, let’s say in Washington, DC,  where people could hear their favorite ‘90s tunes played all night long.

Decades is coming soon.

NYE 2016 in DC

Time for a much-needed clean slate and a way to celebrate it! Here’s what we’ll be up to when the clock strikes 12:

Ultrabar NYE

20151231_nye_1200x630

As one of the longest running New Year’s Eve parties in DC, this one is bound to be awesome. To begin with, they’ve got an open bar for the first hour of their party. After that, they’ve got 5 floors, 4 DJs/musical experiences, and a great champagne special going for both the bar and VIP tables.

Where: Ultrabar – 911 F Street NW
How much: If you are one of the first 300 smart buyers, your ticket for everything is only $30. If you’re even smarter, you’ll reserve a table in advance and get entry along with a complimentary bottle of champagne to pop at midnight.

Every year Echostage delivers a great show and this year promises to be no different: the #2 in the country mega-club is hosting the amazing DJ duo Krewella for their 2016 New Year’s bash. If you want to ring in 2016 dancing alongside 3,000 of your closest friends, this is the place to do it.

Where: Echostage – 2135 Queens Chapel Road NE
How much: $50 to get into this party and it’s well worth it.

Booze Cruise on the Potomac

nye-cruise

Want to keep things a little more low-key, but still awesome? Take an Odyssey Dinner Cruise or hope on the Spirit of Washington and sail along the scenic Potomac River and ring in the new year on the water. Complete with a Platinum open bar, party favors, a champagne toast at midnight, a pre-set crafted dinner menu, and incredible views of the monuments followed by a dock-side party until 1am. Image courtesy of spiritcruises.com

Where: Departs from 600 Water Street SW
How much: A celebration as swanky and upscale as the Odyssey cruise is going to cost you and the slightly more affordable Spirit Cruise will as well, but either way you’ll remember a night like this forever.

Georgetown Waterfront

nye-gtown

Want to stay on solid ground but don’t want to miss the views that come with a cruise? No worries! The Georgetown Waterfront is alight with celebration on New Year’s Eve. Restaurants and bars along the river band together to offer great packages filled with dining, drinks, and celebration all night long.

Where: Just head to the Harbour, everything is centralized around it.
How much: Depends where you go and what exactly you want to do, but here’s a good jumping off point.

Crawl Til the Ball Falls

nye-pubcrawl

There’s nothing like a good old fashioned bar crawl (and one with a name like like this HAS to be a fun). Dupont has a pretty solid set of bars and clubs, no matter who participates this’ll be a great time.

Where: Dupont Circle
How much: There haven’t been any solid plans announced yet, but the Eventbrite is up and active with more information. Check back for updates on location and registration timing. Odds are when tickets go on sale they’ll be gone pretty quickly.

NYE Masquerade Ball

nye-pov

The W is known for it’s high class and high-up views – their POV rooftop bar has the best views of the city and now one of the coolest parties you can attend for New Year’s. Watch the DC skyline light up as the year rolls over with hand crafted cocktails and a cool atmosphere.

Where: The W Hotel – 515 15th Street NW
How much: Tickets start at $75 for general admission, but if you want to enjoy some great food beforehand they have an offer that includes entry plus a 4-course meal at the ultra-hip Pinea  for $135.

NYE Burlesque Ball

nye-burlesque

Manor is another swanky spot to enjoy your New Year’s Eve. It’s the best if you want to watch the streets erupt in celebration – the floor-to-ceiling windows in this lofted lounge have a great view of Connecticut Ave.

Where: The Manor DC – 1327 Connecticut Ave NW
How much: Tickets are only $35 for the early birds, but the price goes up the closer to the event you try to buy tickets. The hot setup: find a friend and buy a couples ticket, you get a pretty good discount by doing it that way.

Tickets obviously already sold out for this one (in less than 30 seconds), but if you have a friend or some kind of connection with an extra stub or two, it’s time to make nice: this show will be historic.

As of right now, the roster for the 2015 Jingle Ball includes 5 Seconds of Summer, Demi Lovato, Zedd, Tove Lo, and more. But that’s not it – they announce new acts weekly leading up to the big event, so the lineup is only going to get bigger. Keep an eye on it on the HOT 99.5 website.

We even managed to get ranked once again as the #1 best place to dance at on the East Coast by DJ Mag. To celebrate all this and more, we’ve enlisted the talents of one of the biggest names in dance music: Krewella!”

Muse is one of the all-time greatest stage performing bands out there.

_________________________

Wilco

When: Sunday, February 7
Where: DAR Constitution Hall
Tickets: Ticketmaster – $53
Generally categorized as alternative rock and alternative country, Wilco’s name has been steadily rising for a number of years. Rolling Stone has consistently named them  as “one of America’s most interesting bands” and they’ve also been regarded as “America’s Radiohead” due to their music’s wide range of stylistic variations. In fact, they have so much to offer that suggesting a single song to listen to would almost be pointless. The best thing to do? Go to this show and experience their talent and range for yourself. _________________________

Bryan Adams

winterconcerts-bryanadams

When: Wednesday, February 17
Where: DAR Constitution Hall
Tickets: Ticketmaster – $43-90
It may be far from the Summer of 69, but Bryan Adams will make you forget about that. One of the OG rock/pop artists, Adams has performed with everyone from The Who to Nelly Furtado – his range in his genre is amazing, and definitely worth checking out.

Halloween in DC

Costumes! Parties! Candy! Halloween is one of our favorite holidays because it gives you an excuse to party ALL WEEKEND without judgement of any kind – especially this year when it falls on a Saturday. Break out your best inappropriate version of [insert occupation], lamest pun-based outfit, or killer face paint job: the best part about Halloween is the prizes, so start planning now and bring your A-game wherever you decide to go. Where might that be, you ask? Halloween 2015 has some pretty outstanding options:

Scream City

halloween-sc

Where: RFK Stadium
When: Now through November 1st
Why: Award winning scare tactics brought to you by a Las Vegas based special effects company. Already hailed as one of the most terrifying haunted houses in the country, RFK’s set up has people warning families that it’s “not recommended” for children under the age 13. Even the website is scary. Scare yourself senseless while having the time of your life for just $45.  Photo courtesy of screamcity.com

Ghost Tours in DC

halloween-house

Where: There are a lot of creepy places in DC (besides the infamous Exorcist stairs, which don’t require a tour guide to visit), but we suggest going on the above-linked tour of the creepiest and most haunted houses around New York Ave and 18th Street.
When: Now through October 31st every Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 pm
What’s up: No reservation needed, but tickets for the roughly 2-hour tour are $20 a person.

Halloween Social at the W

halloween-pov

Where: 515 15th Street NW (F between 14th and 15th)

The deal: POV is probably the dopest bar in DC. With a really cool atmosphere and INSANE views of the city, you can party here on Halloween for the low price of $30. The real kicker, though? Their costume contest winner receives a SLEEPOVER PACKAGE with a “recovery breakfast” the next day. They just get us.  Photo courtesy of wwashingtondc.com

Fall Concerts in DC

End-of-Summer blues? We all have it, but the Fall music lineup is definitely going to cheer you up. Don’t get us wrong – Summer concerts are awesome, but the Fall ones are taking the music scene to a new level. Don’t believe us? Pshh…

Blues Traveler

fall-bluestrav

When: Friday, September 11
Where: Fillmore Silver Spring
Tickets: $38 through Ticketmaster

Blues Traveler may be physically smaller than when he first started out, but his vocal reach and harmonica talent is not. And the Fillmore in Silver Spring is a great place to get the run around up close and personal.

Life in Color

20150912_LIC-lineup

When: Saturday, September 12
Where: RFK Stadium
Tickets:$65 through Ticketmaster

Man, where do we start with this one. We could begin with the lineup, which includes bass favorites Adventure Club and Seven Lions as headliners. Or we could talk about the fact that it’s the East Coast’s largest paint party. But honestly? You should just trust us when we say buy a ticket and get ready to have an insane time. We suggest wearing an all-white ensemble that’ll get dyed while dancing so you can show it off at future shows.

Madonna

This woman REFUSES TO QUIT. And that is not meant to be a slight at her because the more she does, the more she amazes. It’s your chance to see the queen of pop and reinvention at the Verizon Center for what’s sure to be an incredible show. Yeah, we said it. Don’t be a hater. We dare you to rock tights and a leotard on an arena stage when you’re pushing 60.

Echoversary

echo-3year2015-tchamibingo3

When: Friday, September 18 – Saturday, September 19
Where: Really?
Tickets: $30 per show, but if you want to go to both it’s only $50 for a joint ticket (via Wantickets).

For three years this place has been on the forefront of bringing EDM to the nation’s capital, and for three years it has succeeded in doing that and then some. Named the #2 club in the country and #18 in the WORLD, Echostage continues to bring epic acts and amazing shows of all kinds to the DMV. Two nights worth of celebrating isn’t enough, in our opinion.

For you country lovers out there, this is your mecca. It’s also probably the best way to send-off the Summer as Merriweather is the epitome of Summer music celebrations and this marks the end of their 2015 season. If you were lucky enough to grab a ticket before they sold out, it’s time break out the cornhole, pack your your travel grill, and put all your favorite tailgate drinks on ice, because this weekend will be one for the books.

It’s been a long time since she banged, but the songs are still pulling crowds! Gotta give credit to the guy who knows what made him famous and is still willing to capitalize on it (and poke a little fun at himself in the process). For instance: The “Livin La Vida Loca Meet and Greet Package” is in existence along side the “Shake Your Bon-Bon Party Package”. Well done, Ricky.

When: Wednesday, October 21 – Thursday, October 22
Where: Echostage
Tickets: The second night’s show is $45 via Ticketmaster but they’re SUPER close to selling out

In case you hadn’t heard: Disclosure is great. So great, in fact, that a second show had to be added to accommodate for the demand. They initially gained mainstream popularity thanks to a collaboration with Sam Smith on “Latch” and did it once again with the recent “Omen”. Their cool, soulful electronic vibes are everything right now. Odds are both shows will sell out before you finish reading this post, so get on it.

AND Chainsmokers are there with a crazy tour lineup? I need to sit down. At a computer. To buy tickets.

The Weeknd

When: Sunday, November 15
Where: Verizon Center
Tickets: Start at $50 on Ticketmaster

If you haven’t heard of the Weeknd, it’s time to crawl out from the rock you’ve been living under and pay attention: this Canadian born artist began his career at the peak of the YouTube generation after dropping his mixtapes online back in 2011. Obviously, said mixtapes were FIRE because he’s now selling out the Verizon Center this November. His Beauty Behind the Madness tour will more than likely feature the recent radio-favorite hits “The Hills” and “Can’t Feel My Face”, take a listen if you’ve managed not to yet.

Where: Echostage

Andrew McMahon is an inspiration. You’ve probably heard some of his musical influence courtesy of Jack’s Mannequin back in the day, but he has made a name for himself all on his own thanks to a few Emmy nods and a heartfelt song written for his new baby girl Cecilia about the impermanence of life (did we mention he beat cancer?) and his vow to protect her. We’ll give you a minute to gather yourself –sniff-theyrejustallergies-sniff– before you buy a ticket.

“What good is art if no one gets to enjoy it?” Excellent question, Deorro. Panda Funk, lead by Deorro himself, is a west coast record label that prides itself on discovering new artists and letting them explore their capabilities. They aim to keep music as authentic and real as possible, and their show this summer at Echostage should prove to any skeptics just what they’re about.

Foo Fighters 20th Anniversary Blowout

When: July 7, 2015
Where: RFK Stadium
Tickets: Ticketmaster

Saying that this is a concert of colossal proportions would still be putting it mildly. To celebrate their 20th anniversary as one of the greatest, most influential rock bands alive (not to mention the coolest – have you ever read an interview with Dave Grohl? What a guy), the band is bringing together many of the groundbreaking American acts featured in their HBO docuseries, Sonic Highways: Buddy Guy, Gary Clark Jr., Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, LL Cool J feat. DJ Z-Trip – the list just goes on.

In the words of Wayne and Garth: We’re not worthy!

Taylor Swift

When: July 13-14, 2015
Where: Nationals Park
Tickets: Tickets.com

Leave a blank space in your calendar open! It’s time to party like it’s 1989! If you can’t make it one day, shake it off because there’s a second show!

I’ll stop.

But in all seriousness, my girl T-Swift deserves some credit: Her last album shattered the sales of whatever it was Justin Beiber put out and that is something everyone can get on board with. She’s also broken a few Guinness records that haven’t been touched (or realized) since the pre-Napster and mp3 days when TRL was the deciding factor of who achieved platinum status (#throwback #missyouCarson #rememberwhenDiddyranonthattreadmill?). And she’s coming to DC’s beloved Nationals Park.

Adventure Club

When: July 17, 2015
Where: Echostage
Tickets: Wantickets

The Montreal duo started out as a pop-punk band, but after getting bored they switched to the high energy dubstep genre of EDM, generating their initial fan base with a remix of Brand New’s “Daisy”. Taking influence from Echostage veterans such as Tiesto, Skrillex, and Flux Pavillion, Adventure Club’s high energy Christian Srigley and Leighton James are no strangers to the festival circuit: appearing at both EDC Vegas and Ultra Miami in the past few years – their DC show will most definitely be worth checking out.

Nicki Minaj

When: July 22, 2015
Where: Jiffy Lube Live
Tickets: Live Nation

Nicki Minaj’s The Pinkprint Tour hits Jiffy Lube Live this July, bringing special guests Meek Mill, Rae Sremmurd, Tenashe, and Dej Loaf with her. If the trap/rap/pop mix on her December ’14 album is any indication of this tour’s direction, it’ll definitely be a rager on pace with the over-the-top style and attitude we’ve all come to know and love.

Flo Rida

When: July 24, 2015
Where: Echostage
Tickets: Ticketmaster

Southern rapper Flo Rida makes his Echostage debut this July following his October 2014 EP release My House. Having performed and worked with artists such as DJ Khaled, Rick Ross, Trick Daddy, and, of course, T-Pain (a collab which resulted in a Grammy win for “Low”), this show is sure to be a blowout. Tables and tickets are still available for now, but will more than likely sell out soon. If you want to be a part of this party, I’d get on it quick.

Milky Chance

When: July 27, 2015
Where: Echostage
Tickets: Ticketmaster

The German duo Milky Chance are quickly rising to fame with their laid-back blend of slinky dance beats, acoustic details, and soulful vocals. Their hit single “Stolen Dance” came out in 2013, but didn’t catch on stateside until late 2014.  When it did, though, the song shot to #39 on the Billboard Top 100 in just a few short weeks. Still not sold? Give “Down by the River” and “Flashed Junk Mind” a listen, I dare you to not immediately purchase tickets.

Moonrise Festival

When: August 8-9, 2015
Where: Pimlico Race Course
Tickets: Ticketmaster

Oh. Shit.

It’s back: two days of the best music Glow DC has to offer – which, coming from the people who put the #2 club in the country on the map, is a whole lot. Think Coachella just for EDM, but Coachella in it’s pre-commercialized golden days when it was more about the music and less about who was in attendance wearing godknowswhat (although, to be honest, the fashion will probably still be pretty awesome). Not as awesome as the acts themselves, though: check ClubGlow.com for lineup announcements leading up to the big day.

J. Cole

with special guests Big Sean, Jeremih, and YG

When: August 9, 2015
Where: Jiffy Lube Live
Tickets: Ticketmonster

J. Cole brings his Forest Hills Drive tour to VA this Summer, accompanied by hiphop artist Big Sean, contemporary R&B singer Jeremih, and Compton rapper YG (you may recognize those last two from the radio-regular earworm “Don’t Tell ‘Em”). Approved and promoted by Jay-Z, J. Cole has been known to put on a energetic, diverse show: blending rap with jazz, R&B, funk, and neo soul with a love of storytelling. If anything, you should go to this purely for the “I heard it first” bragging rights –  Billboard is predicting big things for guy’s future.

Twenty One Pilots

with special guest Echosmith

When: September 8-9, 2015
Where: Echostage
Tickets: Ticketmaster

Anyone who has lived in the DMV area knows that September still counts as Summer, so finish yours off with a show that has been selling so well and so fast they added a second night. Animated indie-rockers Twenty-One Pilots mix elements of hip hop, hard rock, and pop into performances that have consistently left fans wanting more. Bonus: Echosmith is their special guest. Be there and be like the cool kids (zing!).
