Five reasons to continue partying in DC after the Moonrise Festival

Just under one month ago, Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland hosted the two-day Moonrise Festival event where thousands of attendees partied with the likes of headliners Bassnectar and Kaskade, as well as a who’s who of dance at the moment including trap stars Carnage and Bro Safari, UK dubstepper and heavy bass don Rusko, rappers A$AP Ferg and Waka Flocka Flame, established producers like Sander van Doorn and Tommy Trash and rising stars including Adventure Club.

Of the thousands, it’s entirely possible that there were those of you for whom this was your first live experience with EDM, or you brought someone to the event for their first live experience with dance culture. Well, either if you want to go back but haven’t a clue of when or where to go, or if wanting more reasons to drag your new-to-EDM friends out of the house, here are five reasons to keep partying in DC following the Moonrise Festival.

Partying in DC is safer than ever before

Not only did Moonrise Festival successfully launch itself, it also went off without any unfortunate mishaps, drug-related or otherwise. 2014 has been a difficult year for American concerts and festivals to emerge without significant issues, and Moonrise may have actually been the first to actually showcase the benefits of an EDM fanbase that is smarter to danger and generally more aware of safety than ever before. While this is arguably far from the “PLUR” generation, Moonrise did showcase that the DC area may be the first to truly adopt a safe, yet still spectacular EDM culture overall.

You can have your mind blown in the club, too

For many, Moonrise Festival was the first opportunity that many have had to experience the full-scale excitement and much-discussed mind-blowing experience of live EDM. The experiences associated with seeing and hearing live sets from names like Bassnectar and Kaskade likely resonated with those outside of the world of dance music with the same level of shock, wonder and awe and rarity reserved for observing fireworks on the fourth of July or theoretically seeing a unicorn.

However, now that you’ve done this, definitely realize that EDM is not just a series of massive live events played by the same artists on a yearly basis. There’s a club element to this, too, and between Echostage and Ultrabar, to even smaller locales like Flash, or even Kabin, DJs that play these events oftentimes can be seen and their tracks can be heard in these venues, too. And yes, while you’re not going to get the feeling of tens of thousands of others losing their minds, at Echostage you’ll likely get similar production value and epic nature, Ultrabar will give you the ambiance, while smaller nightclub spaces will give you an intense and more personalized experience with your favorite DJ or favorite track.

If you loved that bass, then attend November 7th’s MEGA Massive at Echostage

If having never been aware of it before, the effects of listening to bass music and high volume and frequency are profound and life-changing. Bro Safari, Carnage and DJ Snake were at Moonrise. Also at Moonrise and returning to the Nation’s Capital on November 7th for MEGA Massive are Keys N Krates and Zed’s Dead. If looking to continue your love affair with low-end frequencies, this is the best place to do so in the DC Metropolitan area this fall/winter.

There’s more EDM being played in more places these days than ever before

It’s pretty difficult to head out these days to any nightspot and not hear pulse pounding electronic tracks with a danceable beat. EDM is ruling the mainstream, so if motivated from Moonrise, it’s definitely worth your time to get out and about in the DC area to experience more. If looking for a premium experience, DC has a plethora, actually all within a walkable distance of each other in downtown DC. On Northwest DC’s I Street, there’s Opera on 14th and Eden on 17th, alongside Lima on 14th and K, Barcode on 17th and L. All of these clubs feature skilled local DJs as well as frequent national (and sometimes global) guests behind the decks as well.

DC has a talented array of locals to follow, too

Names like Des McMahon, the Beltway Banditz and RaceCarBed all appeared at Moonrise. If needing a reason to head into the club, supporting the work of talented local DJs and producers is worth your time and energy. In many cases these names, alongside more established veteran talent like Roberto Gonzales have a history of holding down a room as a top-billed talent themselves, or oftentimes as nationally well-respected support for dance-as-pop stars of the moment who are on tour through Washington, DC.

Five Great DC Men’s Clothing Options For DC Nightlife

Between Moonrise and Trillectro, plus the recently passed Union BBQ, Thank You and Sweetlife Festivals, the DC area has recently been swept up in party fever. The Nation’s Capital also has a diversity of top-tier music-driven nightlife options available, too. However, when it comes to fashion options for these events, someone could make the very easy-to-make argument that it’s a 110% women-driven market. Previews and photo spreads rarely ever spend significant time highlighting unique and quality options for men. However, with this article, that’s about to change, and as well, it will be done with a local spin. If a guy who enjoys the incredible number of options available for entertainment, but also wants to stand out from the collared (or neon tee) shirt crowd, DC has some fantastic local fashion options worth considering.

In visiting the Georgetown-based and gaining in national respect men’s fashion company, finely-tailored men’s clothing no longer has to be a boring and expensive situation. Off-the-rack dress shirts and blazers oftentimes fit uncomfortably or blouse up around the cuff and in the midsection. In many cases, if you’re heading out to VIP on the second level of Echostage or out to the Golden Triangle’s chic Barcode, you’re also likely spending a good amount of time attempting to be physically fit, so, having some gear that can showcase the effort you’ve put in at the gym is worthwhile. Shirts fit according to skinny fit, slim fit, athletic fit, or broad fit (with a number of separations in those size classes). Blazers are similar, and the company also has one-of-a-kind pocket squares, collar stays, tie pins and ties available, too.

The one fashion tip that every fashion-forward male should know is that every man needs a great pair of jeans. Whether the jeans are of the raw, slim-fitting Japanese selvedge variety, or just a great pair of well-constructed straight leg jeans, they’re important. From throwing on a v-neck t-shirt and partying with that epic soundsystem at 9:30 Club or putting on a collared shirt and jacket and heading to any one of the five levels of diverse sounds at Ultrabar, with the right pair of jeans, both events are possible. The classic hip-hop notion of baggy jeans being everywhere is largely done. Being able to wear jeans anywhere is now quite popular though, so having a pair that fit like khaki pants, but don’t make you feel like you’re at the 9-5 is important. Yes, the price is somewhat steep, but if you look at it as an investment in comfort wherever you’re heading when out for entertainment, it’s definitely worthwhile. 14th Street’s Federal specializes in this, and will definitely help you get the most out of the experience.

Dr. K’s Vintage

It’s all about belts and shoes, plus accessories make the memorable man. Many of us are headed out on the town because it’s all about finding a significant other. If a man making this search, finding that one piece of clothing that – even in a dark nightclub or in front of a festival stage filled with tons of people – makes you stand out, is important. Four blocks away from indie-friendly locales U Street Music Hall and Tropicalia, Dr. K’s Vintage specializes in rare and hard-to-find vintage clothing, but it’s the enormous array of shoes, belts and belt buckles that makes them stand out. Thinking that it might be time for a new and much more swagged out belt buckle? It’s often said that you can look at a man’s shoes to get a sense of who he is as a person. Wanting to make a funky statement? Maybe it’s a military-style boot? What about a unique oxford that’s 40-years old and absolutely not on the market. If wanting that ever-so-slight edge, this place is definitely worth the time.

Sneakers. Yes, while frowned upon by many night spots, there’s still going to be that occasional night that calls for dressing down and letting it all hang out. Whether that means a sweaty and wild night of Moombahton Massive at U Street Music Hall, Steve Aoki tossing cakes and dropping bass bombs at Merriweather Post Pavilion, or just heading out for a not-so-fashion serious night on the town in general, by considering your feet in all of this, there’s still a way to sneak in a little bit of flair. Cmonwealth’s existed in Adams Morgan for quite some time, and the one thing they’ve always gotten right is understanding footwear. Sneaker fashion oftentimes tends to get a little out of hand in color and style, but in hand-selecting what ends up in the store, Cmonwealth ensures that you’re certain to find something not too wild, but just crazy enough to spruce up any outfit.

Redeem

1810 14th St NW
(202) 332-7447

Okay, so none of the other places on this list suit your fancy. You’re that one guy that we all know who thinks that DC isn’t Brooklyn or LA, but are impressed by the plethora of big name dance festivals being booked at cavernous suburban venues like Pimlico Race Course and Jiffy Lube Live. Fashion is your “thing,” too, and you think that DC is so corporate and government drab. Well, let me tell you about 14th Street’s Redeem and help you understand that you’re totally wrong. You’re looking for rare and indie clothes, right? Well, Redeem has a variety of rising American and international independent brands, and local designers, too. Do you hate that moment of reading your favorite fashion blog but knowing that there’s absolutely no way that any DC store is going to know about what you’re talking about? That’s absolutely not the case here. If you’re looking for couture, but at the same time ever-so-slightly cost-conscious, this is the shop for you.

Five Dining Options on 14th Street NW

As with any city in the midst of an economic boom period, big business comes to town in a major way and completely changes the landscape. For Washington, DC, this has affected two major areas, food and entertainment. Insofar as entertainment, new options are popping up all over town, and in the suburbs, too. However, as far as food, there may be no finer area at-present than traveling down Northwest DC’s 14th Street strip. If preparing for a night on the town anywhere in DC, 14th Street is a great central location to consider taking a date or friends, and enjoying an incredible meal before an exciting evening in the Nation’s Capital. Unsure of where to head? Well, here’s a list of five of 14th Street’s best options.

original

Ghibellina

1610 14th St. NW
202-803-2389

An Italian Gastro pub, Ghibellina features Tuscan-style cuisine, which basically amounts to classy Italian takes on pizza, pasta, vegetable dishes and desserts. If looking for &Pizza or Olive Garden, this is a clear step above. Upon entering the restaurant, you’re greeted by the bar and a bar-style seating area facing directly out onto 14th Street. That, alongside the exposed brick and beams, plus the candlelit atmosphere gives the space a warm, inviting ambience. Food is best ordered here to be shared by the entire table (like pizza) or in a manner similar to tapas, meaning that smaller plates that can be conveniently shared, too.

Worth ordering: Quattro Formaggi – A pizza featuring buffalo mozzarella, ricotta, grana padano and pecorino romano cheese, as well as pickled hot peppers, garlic, basil, oregano.

El Centro, D.F.

1819 14th St. NW
(202) 328-3131

Let’s say it’s your roommate’s birthday, and instead of having a DC nightlife evening of heading to a bar and requesting her favorite song over and over again (and the DJ not even appearing to pay attention), you want something more. Let me suggest the Tequileria at El Centro as an idea. In the restaurant’s underground space, mixologists craft Latin cocktails and can pour from 200 tequilas and mezcals in doing so. While tasting rare alcoholic beverages, also enjoy a dining menu including traditional fare like tacos and enchiladas, but also a native Mexican menu that is wide a deep, with both vegetarian and meat-based dishes.

Worth ordering: Jalisco Shrimp & Crab Enchiladas – Outside of the obvious, the enchiladas come topped with oaxaca cheese, corn and crema fresca, plus are served with fresh plantains and cilantro rice.

Ted’s Bulletin

1818 14th St NW
(202) 265-8337

So, you’re a little bit older, and your parents are in town, but your friends are still are coming out with you for the evening. Yes, 14th Street even has options for you, too. Ted’s Bulletin blends art-deco décor with a menu that is equal parts delicious and ridiculous. Traditional American with a twist is the key here, with beer-battered fish, steaks, breakfast all day, and yes, homemade pop tarts as well. If looking for a quality meal that is tasty and top-notch without the bells and whistles of other 14th Street locations, Ted’s is ideal.

Worth ordering: “The Walk of Shame Breakfast Burrito” – Sirloin steak, scrambled eggs, hash browns, cheddar cheese and green chile sauce, served with hash browns.

Le-Diplomate_Dito

Le Diplomate

1601 14th St NW
(202) 332-3333

Possibly one of the most physically attractive restaurants along 14th Street, French dining option Le Diplomate features an extraordinarily simple, yet well-delivered take on French cuisine. Appetizers include roasted sweetbreads, onion soup au gratin, steak tartare and and escargots, while entrees include steak frites, trout amandine, beef bourguignon and duck leg and breast confit. With multiple specialty cocktails featured on the menu as well, this is quite possibly one of the few locales in the area that has Euro-centric cuisine delivered without too much innovation.

Worth ordering: Steak Frites – Pan roasted hanger steak served with maître d’ butter and a side of pommes frites.

rice

Rice

1608 14th St NW
(202) 234-2400

For as many newly opened restaurants continue to reach the 14th Street area, “fine Thai” cuisine space Rice continues to deliver quality food, excellent indoor and outdoor atmosphere and a diverse menu that offers a unique dining experience. Pumpkin empanadas at a “Thai” restaurant? Absolutely, and they’re crisp, moist and unforgettable. The menu is separated into “Rice specialties, (aka newly invented Thai fusion cuisine)” as well as “Authentic Thai” and “Healthy Green.” If headed out with a crew with diverse tastes, dietary restrictions or just adventurous eaters, this is a quality choice.

Worth ordering: Spicy duck, stir-fried with Thai herbs and crispy wild ginger

Overview:

Richard Sandoval’s newest DC hotspot is an upscale Latin restaurant serving authentic cuisine during the day, with full bars in both the dining and downstairs lounge areas. Everything in Toro Toro is perfectly Latin themed, from the furnishings to the Day of the Dead bottled beers. Boasting burning amber onyx walls, lush black leather couches, a lit-up bar, glowing orange countertops, and state-of-the art lighting system, Toro Toro creates an ambience of pure elegance.

On the main floor, you can enjoy the quiet, classy atmosphere at the bar, or candle-lit table to unwind from a long day. The happy hour includes reasonably priced and tasty appetizers and cocktails, featuring Latin-inspired dishes such as their chipotle hummus and smoked guacamole.

Located on the bottom level, the 5,000 sqft late night lounge provides an intimate and vibrant setting for guests to dance and converse.VIP tables are placed conveniently by the dance floor with comfy and chic couches for guests. Candles are lit next to plush booths to enhance the intimate ambience. Another notable aspect of this floor is the state-of-the art lighting system, with its beautiful array of bright colors and patterns. The flashing lights are perfectly timed to create a high-energy and sensual vibe on the dancefloor. The beautiful upscale interior is complimented with tasty, Latin-inspired drinks, exceptional service, and uplifting house music.

I would recommend Toro Toro for private events and celebrations. Tables provide an intimate setting for guests to enjoy delicious drinks and for you to have a great time with friends. They also come with excellent service. The VIP hostesses were very attentive and made sure to keep our table stocked throughout the night.

Virginia bans Uber and Lyft – how does this affect DC nightlife?

As technology approaches seeming to move at a pace faster than the rotation of the Earth, hiccups occur along the way that have potentially seismic consequences. If a DC club-goer and nightlife fanatic in the DMV, the recent banning of Uber and Lyft in the state of Virginia is one of these unintended consequences of technology moving faster than the laws can change. Sadly, this issue ultimately may affect  how hard you party and how much you go out, with the hurt potentially extending to the income of the very clubs that we enjoy in the DC Metropolitan area. If the state of Virginia cannot solve its issues with the developing ride-sharing economy, the impact on nightlife culture, though not immediate, will be significant.

uber

The issue for Uber and Lyft is an issue that ride-sharing faces nationwide. Taxi and limousine services are heavily regulated and feature a series of licenses and insurance regulations that Uber and Lyft do not require. Thus, while Uber and Lyft succeed alongside taxis and limousines because they can serve all communities in an efficient, clean and comfortable peer-to-peer manner, they have also in theory been operation unlawfully since starting operation.

As a partygoer, imagine it like this. Say, as a DMV area partier, your favorite style of dance music is drum and bass, and while you like trap and electro, you want more drum and bass in the mix. Since traditional and well-regulated DC nightlife locales aren’t playing what you want to hear, you instead find a very unregulated warehouse rave that plays what you want, how you want it, and oftentimes exactly when you want to hear it, too. Let’s say that said warehouse gets very popular, and government regulators become aware of a) illegal partying, and b) a loss of potential revenue from licensing fees for the space. This is exactly what is happening with Uber and Lyft’s issue with the Virginia state government.

lyft

A statement issued by Lyft to In the Capital regarding the issue said the following: “many of the current regulations surrounding taxis and limos were created before anything like Lyft’s peer-to-peer model was ever imagined, we’re committed to continuing to work with state officials to craft new rules for this new industry. We truly believe that if we approach situations like this positively and collaboratively, we can work together with local leaders to greatly improve transportation access, safety and affordability.”
Of course, in a manner similar to our theoretical DC partying situation, Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles commissioner Philip Holcomb replied by saying, “I urge the citizens of Virginia to protect their families by using only companies that appear on DMV’s website as licensed transportation services. If it’s not on the list, it’s not recommended.”

The idea of potentially under or un-insured Uber or Lyft operators being involved in automobile accidents or other criminal incidents while transporting passengers is akin to going to said underground nightclub and being exposed to any great number of illicit activities or structural issues in the space. If the underground venue is not insured or licensed, the partygoer has no means by which to ensure that their legal recourse will be handled in a smooth and efficient manner. Thus, it’s not as if the state of Virginia is telling taxi service users to not use Lyft or Uber because they’re bad, they would prefer that people stick to better regulated means of transportation in the DC area.

Any regular DC nightlife fanatic that lives in Arlington County (or anywhere in Virginia for that matter) could tell countless horror stories about attempting to get back home from popular DC-area clubs like Northeast DC’s Echostage. DC-based cab drivers are fare-driven operators, and while one trip across the Potomac River can be a prosperous trip, it’s arguably much easier to pick up three separated fares (that could easily be worth more) in the same time it takes to cross the river and return to the city. Uber and Lyft’s peer-to-peer model almost assuring a driver service (more likely than not to suburban destnations) allows for a balance to occur in taxi services that actually benefits the existing cab companies who are oftentimes unwilling to transport someone to a relatively far-flung locale at a late – yet potentially high income – hour.

“Uber has been providing Virginians with safe, affordable and reliable transportation options, so the DMV’s actions today are shocking and unexpected,” Uber posted in a statement. However shocking these actions may be, the shock they may cause to DC”s developing nightlife economy may be more significant. If Uber and Lyft are taken offline in Virginia and an agreement is achieved that allows for a breadth and depth of taxi options in the DC Metropolitan area, then it’s likely the most worthwhile option. Just like as in dance music and potential DC partying options, when the underground and mainstream can unite, everyone benefits in the end.

Electronic Dance Music of the World Cup

An EDM Guide to the World Cup
Contributing Writer Marcus K. Dowling

For the next month, most of the sports and entertainment loving world will have their eyes focused on South America – namely Brazil – as the 2014 edition of soccer’s World Cup takes place. There are those who feel as passionately about soccer as they do many things, namely dance music. As well, when one considers that top DJ/producers Tiesto, Afrojack, Sebastian Ingrosso and many others take part in a yearly charity soccer match during Miami Music Week, the pairing of soccer and dance does not appear as strange as it would seem.

Keeping that in mind, if looking for a preview of the World Cup that involves dance music, you’re in the right place. While also picking a field of the best eight choices to win it all, some choice dance cuts from those nations will be featured, too. As much as soccer provides a global language by which sports fans can unite, no matter the genre, this list should prove that dance has a similar way of connecting everyone.

Must hear Italian dance track: Benny Benassi and Gary Go – “Lake This Last Forever”
Best described as: The “Electroman” and master behind “Satisfaction” and “Cinema” returns for 2014 with a big room and festival anthem featuring the soaring and yearning vocal of British vocalist Gary Go and trademark thumping Benassi bassline.

4. Germany

tensnake1450Biggest star: Miroslav Klose

Plays club soccer for: Lazio (Italy)
Position: Forward

Must hear German dance track: London Grammar – “Hey Now” (Tensnake Remix)
Best described as: Nu disco don Tensnake wraps the vocal of UK top-40 diva London Grammar in four-on-the-floor drums and effervescent mood feeling like Giorgio Moroder’s “Chase” headed into a sunset.

messi3. Argentina

Biggest star: Lionel Messi

Plays club soccer for: Barcelona (Spain)
Position: Forward

Must hear Argentinian dance track: Jesse Rose – Underbelly (Guti Remix)
Best described as: Emotive and deep house maestro Guti gives the funky bounce of Dirtybird Records affiliate Jesse Rose a smoother feel on this remix from Rose’s latest album, The Whole Twelve Inches. Like peering into a hollow African drum pointed into the night air, this one narrows, and widens, providing a sound best described as a warped, elastic feel.

NEYMAR2. Brazil (Host country)

Biggest star: Neymar

Plays club soccer for: Barcelona (Spain)
Position: Forward

Must hear Brazilian dance track: M.I.A. – Bucky Done Gun
Best described as: Combine elements of Jamaican dancehall, American rap, Dominican dembow and reggaeton into a blender. Throw in a heavily-accented female vocal and you get “Bucky Done Gun,” M.I.A.’s 2005 minor hit single from her debut album Arular. Baile funk is Brazil’s most dominant organic national dance sound, and while many, many other DJs and producers make the sound, this single is its most notable mainstream moment.

xavi1. Spain (Defending champion)

Biggest star: Xavi

Plays club soccer for: Barcelona
Position: Midfielder

Must hear Spanish dance track: Maceo Plex – “Conjure EP”
Best described as: A super-emotive vibe-master from Barcelona, Maceo Plex trends from trance to techno, always providing an earnest and honest vibe on his latest release. The Balearic mix of “Conjure” features a horn that makes it feel like a George Michael ballad but is empowered with a dark techno groove.
