From: Holland

Style: Electro w/ a bit of everything

Famous Tracks: Get Dumb, Break Down the House, Hey, Blau!, Show Me Love, Leave the World Behind, Till Tonight

Best Known For: Getting the party started.

DJ Mag Rank: 17

Coming off the most hyped 365 in his 16-year career, Laidback Luke’s got his mind on remixing and remixing on his mind. As he told DJ Mag, his biggest goal for 2011 is to get his hands on Nelly Furtado and/or Madonna… their music too!

Summer 2010 marked the debut of his ‘Super You & Me’ party in Ibiza and his tracks ‘Till Tonight’ with Jonathan Mendhelson and ‘Turbulence’ with Steve Aoki and Lil’ John lit up clubs across the world.

The kung fu disciple and former graffiti artist is back at Glow to kick it with DC nightlife and tag Lima Lounge with some serious beats!
{tab=Bio}
In 2010 Dutch dynamo Laidback Luke is so supercharged and all over your body that it hurts. Blasting your bassbins with blockbuster beats, making your heads spin with his hybrid house styles, even cramping up your hands as you scroll down his discography! Recently, he’s worked with David Guetta, Diplo, A-Trak, Steve Aoki and Lil Jon, and remixed everyone from Black Eyed Peas to Calvin Harris and from Christina Aquilera to Moby. There have been three nominations for Luke in the Beatport Music Awards – and an International Dance Music Award (IDMA) gong in the Best House/Garage Track category for his work on ‘Leave The World Behind’. He’s sold out his own brand Super You&Me parties at Miami WMC. Plus, he’s invited to join Cream for some Super You&Me events at Amnesia in Ibiza. All this while kick-starting a compilation series, with Laidback Luke presents Super You&Me featuring Avicii, via his own label, Mixmash Records, and still finding time to give the next generation of music makers a leg-up through his forum, at www.laidbackluke.com. He’s got over 30,000 followers on Twitter, is sent 12GB+ of promos every week, and boards more than 160 flights per year – without breaking a sweat. Sure his name is Laidback, however when the music’s jumping he’s anything but…

Born in the Philippines, raised in the Netherlands, as a kid Luke loved guitars, graffiti, house and hip-hop, taking the ‘laid back’ tag from Snoop Dogg’s ‘Gin & Juice’. He had a mentor in Dobre (Chocolate Puma) and by 1996 was releasing tracks, remixing for established artists and DJing professionally. He even beat a Dutch DMC champ in battle. His first album came in 1999, and when Virgin locked down ‘Rocking With The Best’, then released his 2002 album, Electronic Satisfaction, his profile really soared. Following this he remixed the likes of Daft Punk, Murk, Oliver Lieb and Tom Stephan, introduced his own label, Mixmash, and went on to hook up with Steve Angello to remix ‘Sexy F**k’ and co-produce ‘Otherwize Then’. He also joined forces with the Swedish House Mafia on ‘Get Dumb’ and signed tracks to Angello’s Size, while ‘Rocking With The Best 2007′ blew up on Mixmash. Around this time his superhero-themed residency – Super You&Me – took off at Amsterdam club Paradiso. It was followed by another epic 12 months that saw Luke release five tracks and 18 remixes, ignite the Stealth Live! CD series with a near perfect club mix, host a weekly show on Radio FG, and perform almost 200 international DJ sets – including a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. It was also the year that witnessed him making a massive mark on Ibiza. After performing at all the top clubs, he produced/remixed every track on his Ibiza Closing Party mix for Mixmag and ended 2008 on another high: with ‘Show Me Love’ (by Luke and Steve Angello featuring Robin S), which entered both the Buzz and Cool Cuts Charts, and even reached # 11 in the UK’s official singles chart. Moving into 2009, his collaboration with the Swedish House Mafia on ‘Leave The World Behind’ became an Essential New Tune on Pete Tong’s Miami show and one of Beatport’s best-selling tracks. His Super You&Me party during WMC was also a huge hit, starring Diplo and A-Trak. Consequently Luke and Diplo produced ‘Hey’, which was supported by DJs like Kissy Sell Out on Radio 1. Of course, Luke’s remix skills continued to be in hot demand too, by, among others, David Guetta, Tiësto, Black Eyed Peas, Dizzee Rascal, Depeche Mode and MSTRKRFT. In fact, mash-ups like his remix of the Black Eyed Peas’ ‘I Got A Feeling’ with La Roux’s ‘In For The Kill’, his very own ‘My G*O*D* (My Guns On Demo)’ and Luke and Lee Mortimer’s ‘Blau!’ blitzed the globe from Australia to Ibiza, where he was nominated for best House DJ at the DJ Awards. As a result, he landed a #27 slot in DJ magazine’s Top 100 DJs Poll of 2009.

Performing and producing relentlessly and innovating musically as an artist like nobody else has propelled Luke and his superhuman fusion of hyperdrivehousestep&ghettojacktrancebass to stratospheric new heights over the last couple of years. In 2010, he’s already remixed Wynter Gordon’s ‘Dirty Talk’, as well as Ferry Corsten, Calvin Harris and Moby, and his own projects, like ‘Till Tonight’ feat. Jonathan Mendelsohn, and ‘Turbulence’ by Luke and Steve Aoki feat. Lil Jon, have gone global. So what more can the new decade bring for our r-evolutionary rebel? Well, with the crazy energy that he conveys and the martial arts that he practises, rest assured it will be out of this world. Yes, our fresh-faced superhero has good ‘kung fu’, always keeping an ear to the ground while his creativity rockets skyward. Luke, we salute you!

Ultrabar resident DJ Maskell to open for DJ Pauly D at Shamrockfest 2011 at RFK Stadium in Washington DC

Renowned local heavy metal music enthusiast and shock jock Michael Swinburne was in attendance at Shamrockfest 2009 to check out the great bands, but along the way he stopped in the Electronic DJ tent. He candidly remarked “God I hate this techno shit, but I just can’t help but dance to it when Maskell’s playing.  He’s really damn good.”

The Ultrabar Nightclub and Club Glow resident DJ will be performing on the VIP DJ stage from 6-7pm, as the opening set for another one of our resident DJs: DJ Pauly D!

You’ll also find DJ Chris Styles, a resident DJ at a zillion clubs around DC and of course Sirius/XM, playing in the 995 DJ Tent with Playboy Model Kay Jay, Rene, Older School, Pat Premier, Dave Russell, and 2nutz!

In the VIP DJ stage, you’ll find the venerable DJ Flounder (of DC101’s Flounder’s Mashups) doing his thing in front of a huge audience, accompanied by Flow, Kwest, lil fos, Neekola (who just released a killer track “dirty female“), Maskell, and DJ Pauly D’s vip-only second set of the day!

From:Australia

Style: House

Famous Tracks: Temper Trap – Sweet Disposition (Dirty South & Axwell Remix), Dirty South – Let it Go, Dirty South feat. Rudy – Phazing, Axwell and Dirty South – Open Your Heart

Best Known For: A hectic tour schedule, crazy bootlegs/edits, Sweet Disposition

DJ Mag Rank: 74

We’ll have to change this after he and Axwell win the Grammy for Best Remix. For now, we’ll refer to Dirty South as the Grammy nominated Australian house master who set the world on fire with one of the most popular tracks of 2009/10. Of course, Dirty South is far more than just the guy who remixed Sweet Disposition with Axwell.

Glow asked him at Electric Zoo if he minded always being associated with Swedish House Mafia. “At the end of the day they’re my friends and we hang out all the time and make music together. I have no problem being associated with them, because I am… it’s all good.”

His latest hit, Phazing (feat. Rudy) has lit Glow ablaze on numerous occasions. The style, energy and attitude Dirty South brings to the booth is infectious

Sunnery and Ryan who? If you’re asking, prepare to be blown away. SJ & RM are two of the biggest things to come out of Holland since Chuckie and Afrojack. How to describe their style… a dash of tribal, a dollop of Toolroom, a splash of Subliminal, a pinch of Defected, zapping synths and a whole lotta bounce. Oh yeah… a bunch of SUPER DIRTY DUTCH!!! Shake it up and you’ve got the unique style that is Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano.

Don’t watch the video of them we posted in the ‘Video’ section. It’s too much to handle.

{tab=Bio}

It has been an amazing ride for the Grammy Nominated DJ/Producer Dirty South aka Dragan Roganovic.

Born in Belgrade, Serbia and relocating to Melbourne, Australia when he was 13, kick started his musical journey as he started to get influenced by everything around him. Like many other youngsters starting out in the music biz, Dragan couldn’t afford turntables but he managed to improvise with his old NEC Hi-Fi and started mixing with the tape decks. From here on, Dragan developed further by making bootlegs and mashups. Next step was to get even more serious so a brand new computer, software and keyboards were needed. The first official production was released in 2004 and Dirty South was born.

Soon after that, there was an invasion of Dirty South releases and remixes. In 2005 and 2006, Dirty South was nominated for the renowned Australian Music Industry’s top accolade, the ARIA awards and in 2007 he took home the “Best Producer” trophy at the inthemix top 50 awards. He did that again the following year and added best local DJ to his awards list. Since then, there have been many nominations, awards and accolades, including numerous “Essential New Tune” gongs by the legendary Pete Tong, who hosts the leading weekly global dance radio show The Essential Selection. Besides the successes he has had on his own, with releases like “It’s Too Late”, “Let It Go”, “The End” and “Alamo”, Dirty South has joined forces with some of best producers in the world and created anthems such as “Open Your Heart” with Axwell and “How Soon Is Now” with David Guetta and Sebastian Ingrosso. On the remix tip, Dirty South has given the remix treatment to some of the most recognisable names in the music industry including U2, Snoop Dogg, Tracey Thorn, Depeche Mode, David Guetta and Josh Wink.

Alongside his productions, Dirty South started developing his DJ career. At first Australian turf was covered many times, but then the demand spread overseas, and soon enough he was playing for some of the best clubs and festivals across the globe, including Ultra Music Festival, Pacha (Ibiza & New York), Ministry of Sound, Space, Vanguard, Creamfields, Global Gathering, Sensation White and many others. The heavy touring payed off, and in 2008, Dirty South was voted No.74 in the DJ MAG Top 100 competition.

In between his heavy touring and producing schedule, there has always been time to do a yearly mix CD, and Dirty South has put his name down to compilations for labels such as Ministry Of Sound, Toolroom Records, Cr2 and SONY to name a few.

This summer has seen the birth of the Phazing concept, from the label of the same name to its first release from Dirty South called ‘Phazing’ which went on to be one of the anthems of 2010 to the ‘Phazing Nights’ branded live events, next year Phazing will continue to grow.

With only a few short years under his belt in the international production scene, Dirty South’s potential to achieve tremendous musical heights seems limitless. This is the story so far, and there is definitely more to come from Dirty South…

‘We’re Phazing A Million Miles Away!’

Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano, two notable personalities with a single goal: to entertain as many people as possible with their deep and funky house sound. As a DJ duo, they are irresistible. Put them in a DJ booth together and instant interaction and chemistry is there, with an eye for the audience and an ear for each other. Effortlessly adapting to one another seems to be no problem for these two best friends and partners in crime.

From the moment they entered the DJ profession, they agreed to do something serious with their common passion: house music. Although they have both been into music since their childhood days, this moment doesn’t feel like it was very long ago. After their first gig together, residencies at different national organizations quickly followed and they visited every quality club and event in The Netherlands as a DJ duo. Sunnery and Ryan have established themselves as top national DJs very rapidly. In a short time, the exotic names of Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano have matured into familiar faces on the dance scene.

Sunnery James comes from a musical family, where he experienced a wide variety of music. From the age of 7, he had piano lessons for several years. As a DJ and producer, he still benefits from these lessons. He met Ryan when he was 19. Ryan Marciano has a specialist’s ear for quality music. For Ryan, music is a ‘way of life’. In his younger years, he used to play many practical jokes. Nowadays, however, he is a very calm person who has completed his graphical schooling and wants to put all his creativity into music. Deejaying is THE way to share their passion for music with others. They are inspired by DJs such as Dennis Ferrer and Kerri Chandler, artists with whom they have performed.

But they have many ambitions. Besides performing, they are very busy with producing. Even that is something they do together. As if they don’t see enough of one another during gigs and their private lives, they’re also studio buddies. In May 2008 they released their first track ‘PINA’. One month later, Sunnery and Ryan released the clubhit ‘Lift U Up’ featuring Melvin Reese. Several remixes and original productions are on the way, and the repertoire grows by the week. There are new projects all the time and the best is yet to come!

In February 2009, Sunnery and Ryan performed a 3-hour-set at the Dirty Dutch Aftershock in Heineken Music Hall. 5500 fans came to join the SJ-RM-vibe. The original Dirty Dutch event is held at Amsterdam RAI, where Sunnery and Ryan performed for 20.000 visitors. Sunnery and Ryan mixed the CD-album that was released with the Dirty Dutch DVD. Other highlights are named below.

Highlights:
- Extrema Outdoor (Aqua-Best)
- Emporium (Wijchen)
- Latin Village Festival (Spaarnwoude)
- Solar Weekend (Roermond)
- Luxurush (Heineken Music Hall, Amsterdam)
- Mysteryland (Haarlemmermeer)

NCAA Coaches D.A.N.C.E. with Justice and Other Things that Make March Awesome

With March Madness right around the corner, ESPN recently released a commercial highlighting the… interesting moves of NCAA basketball coaches as they go through the gauntlet of emotion that is college basketball. It’s their own special dance, and what better song to set it to than D.A.N.C.E. by French electro duo Justice.

March is easily one of the best months ever. NCAA College Basketball is at its peak. Courts get stormed, crowds go wild and dreams either come true or are tragically shattered. The winter is ending and spring is just around the corner. Cherry Blossoms illuminate Washington DC. Winter Music Conference and Ultra Music Fest take over Miami. Colleges throughout the nation go on spring break. Girls go wild.

We decided to do a little research and see what else has contributed to the madness of our beloved third month.

  • 44BC – Julius Caesar is stabbed to death by Marcus Brutus, but Jimmy already knew that.
  • 845 – Paris is sacked by Viking raiders (that just sounds funny)
  • 1565 – The city of Rio de Janeiro is founded. Hot girls instantly flock there.
  • 1781 – The planet Uranus is discovered by William Herschel (as opposed to just Uranus)
  • 1801 – Thomas Jefferson becomes the first US president inaugurated in Washington, DC.
  • 1845 – The rubber band is invented, giving rapper T.I. a career
  • 1850 – American Express is founded… millions go into debt.
  • 1889 – The Eiffel Tower is inaugurated. We’re not sure if it’s the position or the thing in Paris.
  • 1896 – Ethiopia defeats Italy in the Battle of Adwa, marking the first victory of an African nation over a colonial power.
  • 1904 – Dr. Seuss is born.
  • 1923 – Greece becomes a republic. Malaka!!!
  • 1931 – The Star Spangled Banner becomes the US National Anthem.
  • 1933 – The film King Kong opens at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. But he still ain’t got shit on me.
  • 1938 – Oil is discovered in Saudi Arabia.
  • MARCH 10 1940 – THE DAY THE WORLD WAS CREATED… the birth of Chuck Norris.
  • 1953 – The Academy Awards are first broadcast on television by NBC.
  • 1960 – The laser is invented, club kids rejoice.
  • 1961 – Fabio (Model and Actor) is born. But actually, it’s “Actor/Model and not the other way around.”
  • 1962 – Wilt Chamberlain scores 100 points in a basketball game. Then scores over 10,000 times at the after party.
  • 1979 – Anwar al-Sadat, Menachem Begin and Jimmy Carter sign the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty in Washington, DC
  • 1980 – J.R. Ewing is shot on Dallas leading to the catchphrase “Who Shot JR?”
  • 1983 – Taylor Hanson (from Hanson) is born… preparing the world for what will happen in 1994.
  • 1994 – Justin Bieber is born.
  • And it finally makes sense. It’s Chuck Norris and Justin Bieber that make March so special. Case closed.

That makes two of our residents that have gone on to tour with the world’s top pop stars. DJ Enferno left his residency at Ultrabar in 2008/2009 to go on Madonna’s Sticky and Sweet Tour. He’s back in 2011 for a pop residency.

As far as Skeet Skeet is concerned, have no fear. He’ll back in the US at the end of 2011 and ready to drop the freshest mash-up from throughout the world as he resumes his residency at one of DC nightclubs hottest parties, pop nightlife at Ultrabar!
