Bio (via last.fm)

Jarabe de Palo is a Latin rock group from Spain led by Pau Donés (1966), singer, songwriter, and guitarist.

Pau Donés, born in Aragon and raised in Barcelona, worked for various groups before being able to take on his current project, Jarabe de Palo. He began at age 15 with his brother Marc, with whom he formed a group known as J.& Co.Band and later another one named Dentaduras Postizas. During this period he completed his musical tracks in Barcelona with a job at an advertising firm.

His greatest success came to him after a trip to Cuba, where he was inspired to write La Flaca which became the title of his first album in 1996. A year later came the big surprise: millions of albums were sold around the world, and “La Flaca” became the song of the summer in 1997.

After this great success on his first album, Pau was determined to show that the band would not be a one-hit wonder, and with this idea he launched Depende (1998), which was produced by Joe Dworniak in Moody Studios in London over a period of two months. This album featured collaborations with the likes of Ketama and continued with Jarabe de Palo’s ironic and ingenious lyrics, which managed to connect with the Hispanic public and even made inroads among Italians.

In 2001 they released De vuelta y vuelta, their most conceptual album. It showed a change in the band with the first music video of the album, in which Pau appears shaving his head, shedding his long-haired features. This album featured collaborations with the likes of Antonio Vega, Jovanotti, Vico C and Celia Cruz.

In 2003 the band tried to show a change to more positive songs with their album Bonito, which featured the likes of Los Mártires del Compás, the singer-songwriter Elena Andujar and their Italian friend Jovanotti.

In autumn of 2004 the band announced that they would go on tour with their new album, 1 m2 (Un metro cuadrado (A Square Meter)) featuring the likes of Jorge Drexler, Lucrecia, and Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders).

The group has received great awards such as Premios de la Música, Premio Ondas, and Grammy nominations. They have collaborated with La Vieja Trova Santiaguera, Antonio Vega, Vico C and Celia Cruz (soundtrack of El milagro de P. Tinto). Pau has also composed tracks for Ricky Martin and starred in a music video with Alanis Morissette.

Jarabe is a syrup, and is usually used when talking about medicine (cough syrup is jarabe de tos). Palo is a stick. The expression means to “cure” someone by giving them a beating – e.g. saying that a child who is acting up needs jarabe de palo.

10 Things Everyone is Sick of Seeing Posted on Facebook During a Snow Storm

the snow posts are coming

Snow sucks, winter sucks, blah blah blah…you know what sucks even more? -These annoying posts that litter Facebook and Twitter during these polar blasts.  Take a look at the top 10 things we are sick of seeing posted on social media, and then stop doing them. No really, enough is enough.

Miami VIceMiami Vice

It’s so annoying seeing the constant posts of people in the northeast leaving the snow for Miami.  We don’t know what is worse, being snowed in with cabin fever or having to actually leave the house, somehow get to the airport, deal with cancelled flights, possibly crash on the runway, and then do it all over again after your vacation is over.  Because let’s get real, you’re never leaving DC- here’s why with- Polar Blast Pushing People out of DC and the Northeast- FOREVER?

Weather StationWeather Stations

Hey guess what? We all have smart phones with the complimentary ‘Weather’ app.  No need to spread the misery around social media.  We all know it’s colder than a whore’s heart outside, thanks for the reminder.  This also doubles for the lucky ones in warmer climates who post their 70 and 80 degree temps.  There’s a special place in hell for them.

Submerged CarsSubmerged Cars

How many pictures do we want to see of your ride under a snowdrift?  The answer is none.  It’s depressing because it reminds of the emending doom of having to go dig our own cars out of the snow, and we’d prefer to stay inside and wait for spring to naturally melt the snow off for us.

Sloppy FoodSloppy Food

Everyone is posting food pictures.  Let’s get real; you’re no Chef Boyardee ok.  There’s a HUGE line between food porn pictures posted by trained chefs and whatever kind of beige slop you are concocting over there on your George Foreman grill.

Complaining about ClosingComplaining about Closings

Oh boo hoo, the gym, your favorite coffee shop or your favorite nightclub is closed. Really?  Just because you may live around the block, doesn’t mean the employees or owners do.  You should use this time to hunker down and enjoy some relaxing time at home or follow this guide for 7 Ways to Stay Warm during the Winter Storm.

Be thankful that there are less people on the roads because nobody needs to be killed on the way to work just so you can overload on caffeine.

California DreamingCalifornia Dreaming

West Coasters love to rub in their perfect year round weather in our faces especially during these polar snowstorms from hell.  Feel free to get back at them by posting pictures of the 1992 LA riots, the LA smog, or LA traffic to retaliate.

Snow SnobSnow Snob

“Where’s all the snow?” This is the obnoxious of all posts.  Oh you think you’re Jack Frost?  Just because Al Roker told you there would be a foot of snow and only a percentage of the predicted amount fell, it’s still snow and ice and it’s shitty and you’re stuck inside and freezing your ass off.  Stop being a snow snob, you’re not a weather man and any snow sucks, so sorry it’s not towering over your head, if you want more snow fall, move to Canada.

Driving in the SnowDriving in the Snow

Excuse me, didn’t you listen to Oprah?  There should be no texting while driving and certainly no picture taking.  Driving in the snow is already asking for trouble, then here you are with your fat gloved fingers trying to take ‘selfies’ or pictures of the snow and ice littered roads while you’re driving.  How was it not graduating with the rest of your high school class?

Pets in SnowPet Popsicle

Unless you have a Siberian Husky, I’m guessing your 5 pound tea cup Yorkie, though desperately adorable in that designer puffer jacket, shouldn’t be up to his head in snow.  How would you like to go out with no pants on and have your entire body in naked in the snow?  Shovel a small patch in the yard for your furry friend to do their business, put the camera down and get your poor pet back inside before the SPCA is at your door playing that damn Sarah McLaughlin song.

Stay Puft Marshmallow Children

We all saw ‘The Christmas Story’.  Dressing your kids up in layer after layer and then making them pose for pictures.  This should be considered some sort of child abuse.  Back in the day before social media, kids only had to worry about the neighborhood seeing them dressed up like a marshmallow.  Now these poor tykes have to deal with their Facebook obsessed parents blasting their embarrassing pictures all over the Internet.  Just think, one day they will be an angst-ridden teenager and torture you- pay back’s a bitch!

Venue Overview:

Located close to the Farragut North metro and just outside of Dupont Circle, Mari Vanna is an essential stop for anyone in the DC area. Serving up delicious authentic Russian homestyle cuisine during the day and supplying D.C. with an impressive selection of over 70 house-infused vodka’s by night, Mari Vanna boasts an ambient atmosphere that gives its patrons an eclectic “tea party-meets-grandma’s-house” vibe. The D.C. location is its biggest one yet, and for good reason – this place has a lot to offer.

If you like dancing, good music, great food, and vodka that you don’t need a chaser for, then I would say Mari Vanna is the place for you. The cocktail lounge upstairs is perfect for a night out with friends. It’s got an intimate atmosphere but you’ll never feel like you’re being overcrowded. The crowd stays pretty steady all night, usually a mix of DC natives, tourists, and people from all around the world. Bottle service is available upon request. I would definitely recommend ordering some of their house-infused vodka if you have a group of people with you. Another perk of Mari Vanna is the keys. You can ask the bartender upstairs for a key, which you’ll need on most Monday nights to get in (or be with someone who has one). Bottom line: whether you decide to start or end your night here, going to Mari Vanna is always a good idea.

Two-time-Grammy-winning artist/DJ/producer David Guetta is back at Echostage for another unforgettable night. He doesn’t just perform, he creates moments.

Guetta achieved mainstream success with his 2009 album One Love which included the hit singles “When Love Takes Over”, “Gettin’ Over You”, “Sexy Bitch”, all three of which reached #1 in the UK, and “Memories”.

David Guetta has sold over six million albums and 15 million singles worldwide. In 2011 Guetta was voted as the #1 DJ in the ‘DJ Mag Top 100 DJs‘ fan poll.

“I’m not trying to be credible,” David admits with a smile broadening across his soft, open face. “I’m trying to be incredible. It’s very easy to be underground because you just have to obey a set of codes. It’s very formulaic. But it’s also very easy to be totally pop, because it’s very formulaic too. I’m trying to do something different.”
