DC Nightlife Going Out Guide Part 2: Picking the Right Venue
Location! Location! Location!
How to pick the right venue for DC Nightlife
Only when the music is blasting, the crowd is hot and the drinks are flowing can all the stresses of normal life disappear. But picking the correct venue amongst a seemingly endless sea in DC nightlife can be a daunting task.
Fear not, nightlife novices, for after reading this guide you will be equipped with all the information you need to conquer the finest dc clubs, lounges, and bars.
Pick your real estate
Don’t waste your time stuck in traffic, looking for a spot and waiting in line only to find you’re in the wrong place. Every DC venue offers a different vibe – reflective of the neighborhood it’s located in.
Upscale neighborhoods have upscale clubs and lounges. College neighborhoods have college clubs and bars. Gay areas have, you guessed it, gay clubs. Decide what sort of atmosphere you’re looking for and focus on the corresponding area of DC.
Penn Quarter | U Street Corridor | K Street | Adams Morgan | Georgetown | Midtown | H Street Corridor
You can check out clubs by neighborhood above or go through our DC nightclub club guide to see if any of these clubs are right for you!
Age Requirements
It’s ok to be under 21. There’s a wide selection of DC nightclubs, DC lounges, and live music venues in DC that are at least 18+.
Check out our list for 18+ clubs in DC.
Music
You always have to consider the what kind of music you like. If you’re into house music check out any of Club Glow’s weekly events, U-Street Music Hall, Sweet Spot or even District on occasion.
If you love hip-hop, Top 40, pop or Latin music check out some larger spots like Ultrabar, Fur, Love, The Park at 14th or The Lux Lounge that cater to specific crowds or have multiple rooms.
Dress Codes
What does dress code even mean nowadays? Some clubs say dress to impress, some say classy, some say casual, others don’t say anything.
Some places say no sneakers but let people in wearing pumas. WTF?! It works like this:
Wearing shorts or sandals out, in general, is never a good idea – the exceptions being giant festivals and college/dive bars.
Clubs don’t want trashy people that start fights, harass groups of people, and smell coming inside. If you look like you just stepped out of a dirty south hip-hop, raver, or death metal music video you probably aren’t getting in. There are exceptions – no dress code events, clubs catering to specific crowds – but if you’re just looking to go out and have a good time, why not look proper?
We made a men’s guide to dress code in DC clubs and a DC nightlife dress code guide for women just in case you had any questions!
Cost- Guest Lists, Cover Charges, and Drink Specials
Before choosing your venue, it’s wise to decide how much you are willing to spend. Nightclubs and lounges can tend to be pricier, but they often run free passes and drink specials.
It’s best to check out the venues website or Facebook for current offers. Guest lists usually run a special like ‘free before 11:30 for 21+’ or something like that. Sign up sheets are usually on the venues website.
The earlier you arrive, the more likely you’ll find a free/reduced, speedy entry with drink specials.
Transportation – Valet, Parking, Metro
Washington’s metro and bus system can get guests to most popular DC nightlife venues and help to avoid expensive trips and parking nightmares.
Unfortunately, the metro closes at midnight on weekdays and 2AM on weekends, whereas most venues close at 2AM on weekdays and 3AM on weekends.
Most parking garages cost $10-$20 (make sure to ask about closing time). Valet is also available for around the same price at most places.
Be careful parking on the street – DC has crazy parking laws
Read the signs on both ends of the street and stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk ($250 if you don’t)!
U Street Corridor
Rooftop Decks, Sick Sound Systems, and Underground Vibes
The U Street Corridor has historically been at the center of Washington DC’s music scene. Although the area underwent a rough period between the 1960s and mid 1990s, its recent gentrification has revitalized its nightlife tradition. With hundreds of bars, clubs, and restaurants squeezed into such a tight area, the U Street Corridor is a must-visit party destination in Washington, DC!
Below is a list of some great clubs venues in the U Street Corridor.
Flash

Flash is a new dance venue located in the Shaw District. When you first walk in, the ground floor is a trendy, modern bar with a food menu (currently being updated), and a patio area out front.
One of the most unique features of Flash is the photobooth on the first floor.
El Centro

Enjoy quality Mexican cuisine? Love a lively atmosphere? Do you like tequila? With over 200 different tequilas and mezcals at the ready, El Centro is sure to be the new home of your favorite hang out.
Lost Society

A steakhouse on the main level and upstairs lounge w/ outdoor deck.
Lost Society is a chill place to come party. The crowd always looks good.

9:30 Club

The 9:30 Club has long been a staple of DC nightlife, opening its doors in 1980.
It’s often regarded one of the best places to see live music in DC.
DC9

A “hole in the wall” feel, bands you’ve never heard of and Woodchuck on tap.
It’s a hipster paradise.
Policy

One of U Street’s top restaurants.
Policy has a cozy lounge atmosphere to keep the evening rolling well past dinner.
Pure Lounge

While somewhat small, Pure Lounge is packed on Fridays for its rock-bottom happy hour drink specials.
Velvet Lounge

Another small place popular with the hipster and underground crowd.
Velvet Lounge remains a great spot to see live bands and hear local music.
Chi Cha Lounge

One of the best hookah bars in DC, Chi Cha lounge is more than just a place to smoke shishah.
The lounge, DJ, dance floor and bar keep an upbeat vibe while 20-somethings dance and drink.
Take a hit and see what Chi Cha’s all about!
10 Moments to Remember from 2011 in Washington DC
10 Memorable Moments of 2011
2011 left us with some wild, inspiring and somber memories – natural disasters, dead terrorists and the stench of Occupy DC. Some were unforgettable and some we’d just like to forget. Good or bad, here are the Top 10.
Welcome to DC’s Tent City- Occupy DC
Protestors from Occupy D.C. descended upon the city in solidarity to Occupy Wallstreet and similar movements across the country. The group of smelly protestors claim to be a grassroots movement empowering the 99% to have a say in returning the country to a just political and economic system.
It’s January, and the demonstration continues. While city officials have dispersed many Occupy camps across the country, two camps in the District remain: one in McPherson Square and the other in Freedom Plaza. Watch for stray cats!
The Big ‘Osama Bin Ladin’ Death Party at the White House
Ding Dong, the Witch (errr Warlock?) is dead! Hundreds of revelers gathered outside the White House following the death of Bin Laden who was killed just outside of Islamabad, Pakistan, almost a decade after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
The city had no curfew, as horns blared and people danced in blockaded streets. Thousands of Washingtonians gathered around the gates of the White House draped in American flags, chanting “U-S-A,” mugged for the cameras, climbed trees and shimmied up lampposts as passing motorists honked their support.
Murder in Bethesda
Jayna Murray was brutally murdered in the Lululemon Athletica store in Bethesda, Md. by her co-worker, Brittany Norwood. Norwood was convicted of first-degree murder on November 2 in Montgomery County. The horrific slaying made for a sensational cover story and a morbidly staged crime scene. Norwood’s holiday season likely consisted of dining on bologna sandwiches in her orange jumpsuit. Our prayers are with the Murray family.
Earthquake rattles the District
On August 28, DC was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9, the strongest to hit the area in a century. Building in the District were evacuated as hoards of people filled the streets and left motorists stuck in traffic. The epicenter of the quake was 87 miles southwest of Washington DC, near Mineral, Virginia. The quake was felt all around the region, and apparently all the way up the east coast and as far west as Ohio. Notably, The Washington Monument and National Cathedral suffered significant damage during the earthquake.
Hurricane Irene Blows
In late August, Hurricane Irene blew through the Eastern Shore. While the District largely avoided widespread damage from the storm, many areas across the Eastern Seaboard were hit hard with heavy rain and winds that downed trees and knocked out power for days.
It was no Katrina, but it doesn’t take much to have the power go out in DC and it was enough to rid all local grocery stores of all bottled water, milk, bread – the essentials when one is blown out of their home by a hurricane!
Crazies Herald ‘The End of the World’
Doomsday prophets rolled into DC with their messages of ‘The End of the World’ plastered on a caravan of five recreational vehicles that parked near the Washington Monument.
“Have you heard the awesome news?” the side of the RVs asked, in big bold letters. “The End of the World is Coming!” The Rapture, they warned, is upon us. The man pushing the forecast was Harold Camping, an 89-year-old Christian fundamentalist radio host and co-founder of the Family Radio network. We are all still here, breathing a sigh of relief!
Georgetown v. China Battle Royale
In August, players from Georgetown University men’s basketball team and China’s Bayi Rockets men’s basketball team fight during a game at the Beijing Olympic Basketball Arena in China. The Hoyas were hit with garbage from fans as they were leaving the stadium. That stinks! Maybe they are taking out their aggression over the debt the U.S. owes to China!
September 11th 10 Year Anniversary

Former president George Bush and wife Laura Bush joined first lady Michelle Obama and President Obama for the ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks at Ground Zero in New York.
It’s Naptime for DCA Air Traffic Controllers
Air traffic controllers have a tough life sitting in a chair all day at Reagan National Airport in Alexandria. Controversy hit at the airport in April, when a control tower supervisor failed to respond to two planes attempting to land at Reagan National Airport — one carrying 97 passengers and the other 320 — because he allegedly fell asleep on the job.
Obama’s Birth Certificate Revealed
Much to Donald Trumps bemusement, Obama put the rumors to rest about his true birthplace. A copy of the birth certificate has been posted on White House website. Trump, led the media charge in “exposing” Obama as not being born in the United States.
Trump commented after the reveal, saying, “I am really honored to play such a big role in hopefully, hopefully getting rid of this issue.” Trump should spend more time exposing his “real” hair and leave the rest to the President.

Venue Overview
kstreet lounge is one of a handful of lounges to pop up over the course of K Street’s urban facelift in the past decade. With an emphasis on bottle service and table reservations but extra room for casual partiers to get their groove on, kstreet provides a spot for dancing, drinking, and socializing.
Traditionally a luxury playground for a late 20s, early 30s crowd of lawyers and lobbyists, kstreet is starting to expand its clientele by appealing to a younger crowd. While the “who’s who” of DC are a common sight at this venue – sporting Gucci and dropping off their exotic foreign cars at the lounge’s valet parking (complimentary with table reservation) – throngs of mid-early 20s professionals sporting Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger are helping pack the small but popping dance floor.

When you get too sweaty from dancing up a storm, kick back at your table or post up on the bar and soak in the lounge’s 14 plasma TVs, a high-end projection screen, and 20 LCD monitors with customizable content. kstreet is equipped for some serious audio-visual entertainment action.
After cooling off, perhaps give yourself a look in a mirror to make sure your hair gel or makeup isn’t running: the lounge’s minimalist, futuristic-looking white-on-white color scheme keeps the venue relatively illuminated. Although a great place to be “seen,” it doesn’t really offer the intimate privacy of a dark corner.
Parties
- Friday: Hip hop and R&B
- Saturday: Hip hop and R&B
- Sunday: Top 40s and House
