Farruko Returns to Echostage!

Farruko Returns to Washington, DC on Thursday May 17th!

Farruko is a reggaeton and Latin pop singer from Puerto Rico. His given name is Carlos Efren Reyes, and he was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico in 1991. At the age of 16, he began to post his songs under his stage name to MySpace. His first single, “Sexo Fuera del Planeta,” gained thousands of followers, and from there he explored the potential of other social media networks. Due to his massive success on the Internet, he came to the attention of Puerto Rican radio and music industry executives, who enlisted his vocal talents for other artists.
Farruko’s debut album, El Talento del Bloque, appeared when he was 18. It was released by Siente Music and distributed by Universal. Most of its 13 songs were self-penned. The set became an almost instant hit, and several singles followed from it. Some of the album’s highlights included its collaborative tunes such as “Su Hija Me Gusta” with José Feliciano, “Ella No Es Facil” with Cosculluela, and “Traime a Tu Amiga” with Arcangel and Julio Voltio. He also issued the non-album smash “Pa Romper la Discoteca” with Daddy Yankee and Yomo.
In 2012, he issued his sophomore offering, TMPR: The Most Powerful Rookie. Its first smash single was “Feel the Rhythm” (“Siente el Ritmo”), though it was one of five. As a whole, the set demonstrated that Farruko was as comfortable in electro and pop circles as he was in reggaeton; it was nominated for a Latin Grammy.

Top 10 Kaskade Singles Of All Time

As the most recent generational worldwide explosion of electronic music gives way to a surge of new underground names ready to make a splash, it’s intriguing to think about the names that have risen to acclaim that are certain to have a legacy. Among those names is Kaskade, the American electro house and trance legend who visits Echostage on May 12 as part of his Spring Fling tour. In the 2010s, Kaskade’s name became synonymous with progressive, yet pop-aimed sounds with house to the point that in 2011 and 2013, he was named America’s Best DJ by DJ Times. The producer born Ryan Raddon has been busy at work since 1995, and in the time since his career’s genesis, he’s undoubtedly had more than ten star-making production moments. In highlighting just these ten, it will ideally either make you want to buy a ticket to the event on May 12 (while they still last), OR, you’ll dig in and search deeper through his voluminous collection of hit electronic anthems.

10. Angel On My Shoulder (2008) (check it out)

Irish vocalist Tamra Keenan’s worked alongside numerous dance icons including Paul Oakenfold, Davis Morales, BT, and more. However, she may be at her absolute best when she’s singing feverishly over a melodious electro production about how she has “an angel on [her] shoulder, “but a devil in [her] head.” A pop moment supreme that worms deep in your head, it always wows the crowd.

9. Everything (2005) (check it out)

“Everything” is the final single released from Kaskade’s second studio album In The Moment and given its 2005 release, unquestionably a sign of greater things to come from the icon-to-be. Electro-meets-disco in a most thumping and crowd-pleasing manner.

8. Never Sleep Alone (2015) (check it out)

Tess Comirie’s ethereal vocal combines with a breezy melody and undulating bassline on this 2015 Kaskade hit. Eventually unfolding into a zippy and funk-filled heater, this one feels like the soundtrack to quite the massive party.

7. Lessons In Love (2014) (check it out)

Spacey synths dot the aural atmosphere of this production that is significantly aided by a rave-ready top-line. A thunder boomer of an anthem, it packs a stomping energy that feels more than in line with any amount of shuffling or leaping the production incites.

6. Atmosphere (2013) (check it out)

Maybe one of the best examples of progressive house at its feel good best, this one glides along light as a feather but hits your body with the energy of something as stiff as a board, immediately getting your feet and entire body in general moving with the melody. A true champion of a floor filling track, it’s forever an absolute joy.

5. Disarm You (2015) (check it out)

Warner Brothers describes the single as being “a sincere plea for uninhibited or honest love with the beautiful vocal stylings of Ilsey set to a bed of music that is intense and powerful.” Big room horsepower is aided by Kaskade’s deft touch on how to mix a majestic top line vocal, and it’s a winner that is likely to have legs as a Kaskade favorite for years to come.

4. Stars Align (2006) (check it out)

Stomping old school UK house vibes combine with OG American disco feels on this immense vocal banger. This is much heavier than what many associate with Kaskade’s sound, but as the lead single from his fourth artist album Love Mysterious, it was certainly a table setter for his eventual mega-massive stardom.

3. Be Still (2006) (check it out)

Gargantuan extended builds and a lilting vocal highlight an intentionally disjointed sound that Kaskade has used to great success. The amount of liveliness apparent in this production is in so many ways due to the ability of Kaskade as a producer to pay equal attention to the subtleties of creating engaging top lines and bottom ends.

2. Steppin Out (2014) (check it out)

There’s an argument that says that pianos are the most powerful organic instrument oftentimes used by house music producers. “Steppin’ Out’s” voluptuous and warped guitar line over a strong bassline would beg to differ. Attempting to not dance to this is a recipe for immediate failure. This one is an overall heater.

1. I Remember (feat. Deadmau5) (2008) (check it out)

The thumping power of club-aimed house combines with trance and top-40 aimed pop vocals for Kaskade’s largest ever career single. There’s something for every stripe of Kaskade fan from his near two decades on top of the electro house game. A deep as it is mainstream, it best highlights the aspects of style and appeal that makes Kaskade seemingly iconic and relevant at all times in any electronic music conversation.

Echostage Is The Top Venue In North America!

For the better part of 50 years, Washington, DC has always been one of many American cities at the leading edge of the United States’ ascendance to being a top-tier North American and global electronic music destination. Cities like New York, Chicago, and Miami — and not DC — arguably surged to the forefront of being considered places where America best showcased its excitement about electronic music. In previous eras, clubs like Studio 54, Warehouse, Liv, and more defined excellence in musical presentation and experience delivery. Recently however, Washington’s Echostage was named by DJ Mag as having both one of the top 10 overall nightclubs in the world and North America’s number one electronic music venue. Thus, like so many lasers aimed from the stage during a Tiesto or Eric Prydz set at the now internationally vaunted space, the perception of the present and future of where electronic music is headed in America has been brilliantly highlighted. There were once many cities sharing the lead regarding how America’s presentation of dance is judged worldwide. Now, there may, via this achievement, arguably be only the District of Columbia at the forefront.

Echostage’s rise as a world leader in electronic music and its associated nightlife could not have occurred without reflecting something of the growth of concerts in general as must-attend live events in the Nation’s Capital. Moreover, the ability for venues in the city in general meeting the expectations of that demand is also noteworthy in understanding the reasons as to why Echostage’s significant success has occurred.

From 2007-2012, the 9:30 Club won the “Top Club” award as presented by Billboard Magazine. As well, underground electronic music bass-bin U Street Music Hall has achieved significant acclaim as a top-ten venue nationwide from Rolling Stone and Beatport. As well, Verizon Center continues to be a premium mega concert destination, while newer venues like brand new house and techno friendly venues like Soundcheck and Flash, plus SW DC’s soon-to-be-built 6,000 capacity Anthem offer the promise of continuing this now established expectation of worldwide acclaim for District-based concert halls.

Importantly, there’s also a legacy in how DC has been one of many cities key in the development of both the industry and culture of electronic music in America that Echostage expands upon, improves, and redefines.

In the 1990s it was in spaces like Zei Club, Fifth Column, Eighteenth Street Lounge, Nation, and Tracks where DC’s scene achieved a greater level of national renown than ever before. Zei was a three-level industrial space in an alley located behind McPherson Square that fostered numerous scenes from then-exploding techno to the ascendance of trance, while Eighteenth Street Lounge has ownership ties to DC-based and hybrid funk/house/electronica legends Thievery Corporation.

As for Nation (aka the Capitol Ballroom), it was the home of Buzz, an influential underground party that was voted the number one party in America for four straight years in that decade. Iconic names including Moby, Little Louis Vega, and more were booked for those events. As for Tracks, it was open near the Navy Yard Metro Station from 1984-1999, and in 2013 was referred to as both “the legendary nightclub of Washington, D.C.” as well as “[attracting] a diverse cross section of the LGBT community, including whites, blacks, men and women, Latinos and Asians,” and “[meaning] considerably more to considerably more people for considerably more years than any other nightclub in D.C. history” by the Washington Blade.

By 2012 though, America’s electronic music fascination exploded via the EDM boom, expanding interest past typical club capacities and into arena-style settings. DC clubs immediately preceding Echostage including Lima, Fur, Ibiza, and the still-standing Ultrabar initially excelled at fostering the quickly developing EDM craze, but quickly grew too small to contain its appeal. Thus, Echostage, with its 30,000 square feet of space, top-tier sound design, advanced LED visual displays, laser shows, 60-foot bars and 30-plus bottle service tables a) allowed for a maximum capacity of all music fanatics to enjoy themselves, and b) ultimately put the Nation’s Capital over-the-top as America’s top electronic music destination and one of the must-visit electronic music locales worldwide.

One can only imagine what the future holds for electronic music, its culture, live concerts, and Washington, DC. Conservative estimates note that by 2025, the population of America’s capital city will exceed 800,000 residents, while the population for the DC Metropolitan area in general should top 6.25 million. As well, electronic music and its culture continue to resonate and expand worldwide, by the millions among fanatics old and young. Therefore, there’s likely a space, probably in Washington, DC, where this all continues to grow in the most amazing manner possible.

Top 25 NYC Rap Hits of 1996-2006 aka “the Jiggy Era”

Not just at Decades, but at all of the clubs in the Panorama/DC Clubbing family, there’s a true love for legendary New York-based rappers as well as their most iconic hits. We’ve also noted that for as many things may feel different as of late, one of the more exciting vibes may be the idea that the idea that we may see a resurrection of the “jiggy era,” aka the time when the street-meets-club-meets-pop vibe of rap stars including the Notorious B.I.G., 50 Cent, Puff Daddy/P. Diddy, Ja Rule, and more. Therefore, we’ve gone through Billboard charts and numerous critical reads and countdowns about this amazing era in rap and compiled the best of the best.

NUMBERS 25 TO 16

25. Jay Z – Dirt Off Your Shoulder (2004) (PURCHASE)
24. LL Cool J – Loungin’ (1996) (PURCHASE)
23. Puff Daddy – Been Around The World (1997) (PURCHASE)
22. Lil Kim – No Time (1997) (PURCHASE)
21. Jay Z – I Just Wanna Love You (Give It To Me) (2001) (PURCHASE)
20. Puff Daddy – Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down (1997) (PURCHASE)
19. Busta Rhymes – Woo Hah (Got You All In Check) (1998) (PURCHASE)
18. Terror Squad – Lean Back (2002) (PURCHASE)
17. Jennifer Lopez feat. Ja Rule – Ain’t It Funny (2001) (PURCHASE)
16. Ja Rule feat. Ashanti – Always On Time (2001) (PURCHASE)

TOP 15

15. 50 Cent feat. Nate Dogg – 21 Questions (2003) (PURCHASE)

50 Cent followed up his immediate pop smash success with another song we’ll re-discover later on in this countdown with a duet featuring left-coast legend Nate Dogg. A peerless rap-love ballad that still holds a near and dear spot in the hearts of all who never forget it, it continues to set a standard of excellence.

14. Nelly feat. P. Diddy and Murphy Lee – Shake Ya Tailfeather (2003) (PURCHASE)

The soundtrack for 2003-released film Bad Boys II created the perfect moment for St. Louis’ Nelly to get the swaggerific East Coast co-sign from none other than P. Diddy himself. The result was a hip-shaking hit that still packs dancefloors to the present day.

13. Chris Brown feat. Juelz Santana – Run It! (2005) (PURCHASE)

The surge of Cam’ron, Jim Jones, and the Dipset was a rap radio phenomenon that eventually surged through to the pop charts. Key to this surge was the acclaim of Juelz Santana, who impressively went from Dipset lieutenant to crossover pop icon to Grammy nominated artist. This Chris Brown song created massive success for both Brown and Santana.

12. Fat Joe feat. Ashanti – What’s Luv (2001) (PURCHASE)

By 2001, Fat Joe had spent a solid decade in the rap industry without truly hitting crossover success. However, in blending with Murder Inc.’s lead pop diva Ashanti he achieved the greater acclaim that he arguably had long deserved.

11. P. Diddy feat. Ginuwine & Loon – I Need A Girl (Part 2) (2002) (PURCHASE)

The second generation of Sean Combs’ hip-hop career was highlighted by a change in name from Puff Daddy to P. Diddy, but the hits — as always — couldn’t and wouldn’t stop. Though not dependent upon an 80s pop sample for its success, this danceable ballad still was a Bad Boy hitmaker.

10. Notorious B.I.G.- Mo Money Mo Problems (1997) (PURCHASE)

Biggie’s most significant posthumous hit was his single “Mo Money Mo Problems.” Spurred on by one of his own quotes about the issues attached to making so much money so soon in one’s career, this is a cautionary tale with significant pop appeal.

9. Notorious B.I.G. – Hypnotize (1997) (PURCHASE)

Herb Alpert’s jazzy 1979 hit “Rise” provided the perfect backdrop for Biggie Smalls going in on big upping not just Brooklyn — as always — but himself, as well as how his friends in, yes, DC, prefer wearing Versace. It’s likely one of his most instantaneously iconic songs from his career.

8. Jennifer Lopez feat. Ja Rule – I’m Real (PURCHASE)

Ja Rule’s ability to seamlessly blend rap and R & B flavor took him from being a street flavor-favoring hardcore emcee to being one of the Billboard charts’ favorite rappers of the early 2000s. Similarly to “Ain’t It Funny,” this increased the crossover success garnered by the earlier mentioned J-Lo and Ja Rule collaboration.

7. 50 Cent feat. Olivia – Candy Shop (2005) (PURCHASE)

Following the success of his debut album, 50 Cent returned in 2005 with The Massacre, his sophomore release. Clearly, 50 was not guilty of hitting a “sophomore slump,” as this album kicked things off for a second 50 Cent album that went on to achieve 15 million copies in global sales.

6. Mariah Carey feat. Ma$e and The Lox – Honey (1997) (PURCHASE)

Mariah Carey’s been NYC rap-affiliated since going back “like babies with pacifiers” with the Ol’ Dirty Bastard. However, on her 1997 album Butterfly, her collaboration with Bad Boy’s Ma$e and The Lox is a perpetual pop-rap pleasure point.

5. Pussycat Dolls feat. Busta Rhymes – Don’t Cha (2003) (PURCHASE)

Maybe the greatest success of the influence of the “jiggy rap” era was that Vegas showgirl concept-turned-pop music act could blend with Busta Rhymes’ long-established dominance as a key contributor to the “jiggy” era and rocket to pop superstardom.

4. (tie) 50 Cent feat. Snoop Dogg and G-Unit – P.I.M.P. (2003) (PURCHASE)

The idea that 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, Lloyd Banks, and Tony Yayo can all be on the same track discussing the fine arts of money and seduction is astounding. Steel pan meeting boom bap and rhythmic swing makes for a next level musical experience.

4. (tie) 50 Cent – In Da Club (2003) (PURCHASE)

Celebrating parties in the club? Pretty much par for the course behavior, and thus, it definitely could deserve an anthem. But, this anthem probably exceeds any expectation anyone could have for a song just discussing popping bottles and getting it in on a weekday or weekend nightlife evening.

3. Puff Daddy feat. Faith Evans and 112 – I’ll Be Missing You (1997) (PURCHASE)

Celebrating the life and times of the Notorious B.I.G. could appear to be a cause for a less than entertaining song. However, in classic 1997 Puff Daddy fashion, it’s the sample from The Police’s 1983 smash “Every Breath You Take” that makes it a sing-and-dance-along classic.

2. Nas feat. Lauryn Hill – If I Ruled The World (1996) (PURCHASE)

By 1996, Lauryn Hill’s star had exploded via singing Roberta Flack’s 1974 hit “Killing Me Softly” on her rap trio The Fugees’ cover hit on the same name. Singing the hook of Kurtis Blow’s 1985 hit “If I Ruled The World” allowed for Nas to achieve a similar to Blow level of mainstream success and renown.

1. Beyonce feat. Jay Z – Crazy In Love (2003) (PURCHASE)

A decade before they were married, Jay Z and Beyonce were still very much an item. Impressively, it was because of Jay’s New York rap swagger that Beyonce was able to increase her crossover appeal. A match made in heaven long before it was literally a match made in heaven at the altar, this one is significant on many levels.

DCClubbing’s Guide To Halloween Weekend 2016

Halloween falls on a Monday in 2016. However, if you’re thinking that the weekend prior to the big day, or the day itself isn’t going to be a SERIOUS party weekend in the Nation’s Capital, that’s where you’re wrong. From bars, to clubs to haunted houses and more, this year’s Halloween won’t just be scary, it’ll absolutely be lit! Here’s DCClubbing’s suggestions for making this coming Halloween weekend one to remember.

Saturday, October 29

Scream City

There’s two state-of-the-art, award-winning, and completely indoor haunted houses in the parking lot of RFK Stadium. “Exorcism Estate” is said to have been “owned by the parents of the spawn of Satan himself,” while the “Slaughter Factory” is owned by a cruel man who “slaughtered his staff like livestock one fateful night and displayed them like sides of beef hanging on rusty meat hooks stabbed through wrists and ankles.” Intense, right? Scared yet? Check it out!

Ladies Night At Ultrabar

ultrabar

Saturday night is Ladies Night at Ultrabar, which, on Halloween Fright Fest Weekend means that one can only expect nothing short of the wildest of times with the most amazing of costumes. The party is 18+, and features four floors of music from dance and hip-hop, to Latin, International, Top 40 and mashups. Definitely expect that, given it being Halloween weekend, that there will be epic events planned to match the theme.

Halloween Unrated at Decades

decades_bizcard_front

DC’s only retro-themed nightclub truly gets into the swing of things on Halloween weekend with a fright-filled fun-overload of a double feature of party action. “Halloween Unrated” takes place on both Friday and Saturday night, and it being “unrated” is meant as a“take it to mean what you will” welcoming with open arms. From slush machines and video games to retro hits from the ‘80s-’10s, there’s always something for everyone at Decades and in adding costumes to the mix, this should be nothing short of an absolutely wild night.

Sunday, October 30

Laurel’s House of Horror

If looking for another area staple haunted house, Laurel’s House of Horror is built inside of an abandoned movie theater, and has been visited in the past by the likes of  Texas Chainsaw Massacre series actor “Leatherface” R.A. Mihailoff. The space has had it’s own paranormal experiences as determined by Chesapeake Ghost Hunters. If horror movie superstars in *actual* haunted houses aren’t enough to get you excited, then the 2016’s “Zombie Apocalypse” house theme should do the trick (or treat).

Hi-Lo At Soundcheck

Rising house music superstar Oliver Heldens pushes throwback and club-ready vibes via his Hi-Lo side project. If looking to hear very familiar dance sounds updated with kicking basslines and techno-style grooves, look no further. If a true dance fanatic, seeing a top performer like Heldens in such an intimate space is an opportunity not-to-be missed. Add in the promise of what Soundcheck is calling “Hi-Lo-Ween” has in store, and it’s a surefire recipe for a great night on the town.

Rocky Horror Picture Show At E Street Cinema

Being in your seats by 11:59 PM on Sunday, October 30 makes this annual showing of 1975’s most wild film and one of the most uniquely entertaining movie-viewing experiences ever. From getting dressed in costumes to literally throwing bread slices at the movie screen, it’s an amazing time. If you’ve never seen the on-screen antics of Brad, Janet, Dr. Frank-N-Furter and crew, this film is playing from the 15-31 at E Street, and is well worth taking the time to check out, maybe even twice.

Monday, October 31

Field Of Screams

Aside from being likely scared beyond belief by it’s four haunted attractions, Olney’s “Field of Screams” has 15 bonfires, smores, funnel cakes, fried Twinkies, and Oreos. The nighlight of making the trek could be the “Trail of Terror,” which for 2016 is themed as a “Camp Fear” where “a group of 20 year old campers once laughed, played and brutally died.” It’s recommended that nobody over the age of 13 head out to the Field of Screams, so definitely expect something that’s a bit more over-the-top and adult-aimed in presentation.

Griz At Echostage

Funky vibe-man Griz brings his unique brand of festive celebration to DC on Halloween. The soul-stirring bass lover oftentimes plays a like saxophone during his set, which puts the whole presentation over-the-top. The Detroit-based DJ/producer’s latest album is entitled Good Will Prevail, and with tracks featuring the likes of future-forward hip-hop adoring producers like Louis Futon and Cory Enemy, it’s possibly his most mainstream-ready release-to-date.

Monday Night Football at Barcode

If fright and fear aren’t exactly your cup of tea, the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears will be playing each other in a game with huge implications if the Vikings remain undefeated and/or one of the most surprising stories in the NFL in 2016. As well, the matchup is one of the NFL’s oldest, and the teams have played each other 12 other times on Monday night. Checking it out at Barcode’s long-standing Monday night event is definitely one of the premier spots in town for checking it out.
