7 Ways To Turn Irish This St. Patrick’s Day!

St. Patrick’s Day 2018 will be here before you know it, and we here at DC Clubbing are here to ensure that it’s your best St. Patty’s Day ever. It’s the holiday of holidays. Over half of Americans celebrate it, spending over $5 billion in pubs, bars, and clubs nationwide. Most of you will consume anywhere from five to seven beverages, one in three of you will eat some manner of corned beef and cabbage meal, and 82% of you will be wearing green. Taking all of this into account, we’ve compiled a list of seven items we believe you need to celebrate your most ideal March 17th holiday. Enjoy!

MAKI INSULATED BEER MUG (purchase here)

We think you’ll be headed to a bar crawl on St. Patrick’s Day. Well, whether you’re pre-gaming or outside containers are allowed on your trek, this keg-similar 24-ounce mug is perfect. It’s all about getting in the proper frame of mind for hours of trekking from place to place. This mug, we feel is an ideal addition to those activities. Plus, no matter the weather, the beer is ALWAYS cold. Enjoy!

GREEN GUINNESS VINTAGE T-SHIRT (purchase here

For 260 years, Guinness’ dark Irish brew has been synonymous with stout beer excellence. They sell one billion ounces of the beverage per year worldwide, and one full percent of that is consumed on St. Patrick’s Day. Are you looking to dress the part with the one thing likely most generally affiliated with the holiday as a day of celebration? The numbers (and the deliciousness) never lie.

IRISH SETTER FOOTWEAR (purchase here)

Hunting down amazing times requires comfortable footwear. Also, given how out of control the weather has been of late, having proper protection against the elements is also essential. Yes, Irish Setter footwear is from Ireland, but when you re-imagine their boot description for St. Patrick’s Day shenanigans, it feels both related to the Emerald Isle and worldwide in appeal. “Crafted for the most demanding booze hunter, our Wingshooter boots feature a full-grain, waterproof leather upper, combined with our UltraDry™ technology for complete weatherproofing. Our Prairie sole reduces weight, provides underfoot cushioning and provides excellent traction in any multi-level nightclub terrain.”

NEW BALANCE SNEAKERS (purchase here)

Did you ***really*** enjoy St. Patrick’s Day and maybe the holiday could be the start of a more significant celebration for you in years to come? Well, these sneakers are for you. Nothing says comfort and fashion like New Balance’s trademark suede on rubber, and keeping it festive in green elevates the iconic style to an appropriate level.

IRELAND SOCCER JERSEY (purchase here)

Are you a soccer fan looking for a unique conversation starter? Here’s a great look. Yes, the side that plays its home matches at Landsdowne Road didn’t qualify for World Cup 2018, but the legacy of the likes of Robbie Keane, manager Jack Charlton and more is definitely appropriate and likely to get a mention or two during a particularly Native-driven celebration.

St. Patrick’s Day Party Supplies (purchase here)

If you’re anything like we are here at DC Clubbing, sometimes you have to bring the party TO THE PARTY. A collection of Irish Shamrock Necklaces, St. Patrick Shutter Shades Glasses, Shamrock Necklaces, and other assorted St. Patrick’s Day merchandise? With the aid of these supplies, it sounds like you’re planning the prelude to quite the turn-up!

GIANT LEPRECHAUN HAT (purchase here)

Image result for elope Giant Leprechaun Hat

We all have this one friend who’s the most Irish guy we know. His lineage goes back to St. Patrick himself, he’s been to Dublin 100 times, has the Irish flag tattooed on his shoulder and claims Notre Dame as his favorite college sports team in EVERY athletic endeavor. You see this guy in your head, right? And you see him in this hat as well, I’m sure. This hat is a foot tall, with an elastic & Velcro size-adjustment band, a zipper opening so the cap can be stuffed with tissue to hold shape, and the wire in the brim can be shaped as desired. Yes, this hat isn’t just festive, it’s COMFORTABLE, too!

5 Things You Need To Remember Before You Go Clubbing In DC

The weather is breaking! Therefore, we know that you’re going to want to head out to the club! Here at DCClubbing.com, we may or may not know a few things about having a good time on the town, so we decided to leave a few helpful hints to take your nightlife activities to the next level. Looking to ensure that you and all of your friends have a fantastic night on the town? Follow these guidelines!

1. If you’re traveling in a crew of 8 or more, get a table.

Pure mathematics state that going out and having a “good time” will ideally cost you around $50-$100. As well, we know that most people headed out for a night on the town don’t travel alone. If you and your crew of friends are particularly fond of a particular alcohol and mixer combination or two, that’s when the idea of a table makes sense. In the case of an ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure, two bottles of your favorite liquor, with orange juice and cranberry juice, PLUS SEATING adds to the comfort and convenience of what can tend to be something often a lot more difficult.

2. Follow dress code guidelines

Dress codes exist for a reason. A venue’s management wanting to add a touch of class to “just” a night on the town to make it a premium event will often add a dress code for atmospheric purposes. Also, if you’re in the market for a potential mate, look at a dress code as not a negative, but rather a positive addition to your attempt at making the ideal connection.

3. Ride-sharing…use it.

We’ve all been there. In either the preparation for a night on the town or at the party itself, we maybe take things a step too far or a drink past our limits. There’s something about ridesharing, and the ease and comfort of direct and customized door-to-door service, that’s ideal for a night where things can get somewhat crazy pretty quickly. Both Uber and Lyft offer first-use rider discounts, and many late-night drivers will often have water, aspirin, or whatever is necessary for solving potential post party headaches.

4. Observe the buddy system

When possible, always head out with a group of friends. Whether at a massive club or an intimate venue, being out with friends you trust makes sticking together and enjoying the atmosphere that much more entertaining. Want a surefire way for your Snapchat stories to be super lit and for your Instagram pics to get hundreds of likes? There’s real worth in being in the most fantastic place with the most amazing people. Hot spots like Ultrabar, Decades, Soundcheck, Barcode, and Echostage are that much more epic when you’re with your friends. A pro tip? Make sure you’ve got everyone’s number and opened up a group chat to make it easy to get in touch if you can’t find each other in the midst of having all of the fun.

5. No two clubs or parties are the same. Homework is essential.

Every venue comes equipped with its own particular set of charms. From Facebook to magazines like DJ Mag and Mixmag, and others in the business of offering helpful reviews and more, there’s always someone in the industry of being in the know willing to give you that extra 10% of knowledge that takes an evening to a whole other level of fun. Is there a unique beverage that is unique to the venue? A special selfie opportunity? Rules regarding dress code, free early entry, and if there’s say, a celebrity in the building? These are all things that are worth learning from a simple background check.

LUNCH

Barcode (MODERN AMERICAN)
1101 17th St NW, Washington, DC 20036
Lunch Served From: Monday-Friday, 11:30 AM – 3 PM

Phone: 202 955 9001

Given Barcode’s location directly in the midst of a plethora of associations, start-ups, and professional organizations, it’s the perfect spot for a high powered lunch meeting. The she crab soup appetizer with steak and fries main course is an amazing surf and turf combination. Throw in the apple pie with vanilla gelato and bourbon caramel and it’s going to make heading back to the office quite the difficult proposition, indeed!

Ambar (EASTERN EUROPEAN)
523 8th St SE, Washington, DC 20003
Lunch Served From: Monday-Friday, 11 AM – 2 PM

Phone: 202 813 3039

Ambar promises “modern international Balkan cuisine. If looking for a seemingly adventurous take on lunch during restaurant week, the Balkan kebob (beef & veal/spring onions/kajmak/ fries) and panna cotta (Roseberry sorbet/peanut crumble/orange jelly/strawberry yogurt) combination are fairly true to tradition. Most intriguing/unknown in this dish is kajmak, aka a rich and sweet boiled milk cream delicacy.

Mastro’s (STEAKHOUSE)
600 13th St NW, Washington, DC 20005
Lunch Served From: Monday-Friday, 11:30 AM – 3 PM

Phone: 202 347 1500

Yes, Mastro’s is indeed, as pictured, a steakhouse. But there’s something stunning about the possibility of a “seafood double play” of a tuna tostada appetizer with a pan-seared Scottish salmon with truffle butter main course that is amazing. Mastro’s well-regarded profiteroles (sweet creme-filled French pastry balls) with vanilla ice cream for dessert sounds like an ideal completion.

Oyamel (MEXICAN)
401 7th Street NW, WashingtonDC 20004
Lunch Served From: Monday-Friday, 11:30 AM – 3 PM

Phone: 202 628 1005

Master chef/owner Jose Andres’ Mexican street food destination offers a rare four-course lunch offering. “Ceviche con citricos” features striped bass in a pineapple-habanero marinade with citrus, jicama, and fresno chiles. As for “Col de bruselas estilo San Quintín?” Crispy Brussel sprouts with a chile de árbol sauce, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, and lime. A main course of “Taco de frijoles y requeson” is a blend of vegetarian frijoles refritos with house made sour orange requeson cheese, salsa chiltamate and garnished with onions and cilantro. Add in a dessert of “Pastel de tres leches con piña” that is a rum and pineapple cake served with a scoop of caramel ice cream, and the meal has truly been a citrus-filled delight.

BRUNCH

Del Mar (SEAFOOD)
791 Wharf Street SW, WashingtonDC 20024
Brunch Served From: 11:30 AM – 2 PM

Phone: 202 525 1402

High-end Spanish Mediterranean brunch at Restaurant week prices? This is exactly what this week is made for! The paella and raw bar are especially renowned here, and well worth the time and travel down to the wharf.

Fiola Mare (ITALIAN/SEAFOOD)
3050 K Street NW, WashingtonDC 20007
Brunch Served From: Sat 11:30am – 2:00pm and Sun 11:00am – 2:00pm

Phone: 202 628 0065

Traditional Italian and Mediterranean cuisine goes to brunch at Georgetown’s Fiola Mare. The “signature” brunch is a specially-crafted weekly menu, so it’s definitely advisable to give a call ahead for a diverse menu that features both progressive seafood takes and Italian favorites.

Kapnos Kouzina (GREEK)
4900 Hampden Lane, BethesdaMD 20814
Brunch Served From: Sat and Sun 11 AM – 3 PM

Phone: 301 986 8500

A three-course brunch option from Mike Isabella, one of the DC Metropolitan area’s most recognized Greek cuisine experts sounds delicious. We suggest pairing the favosalata (yellow lentils, scallions, black garlic, pine nuts) spread appetizer with the crispy lamb, potatoes, and feta frittata main course, and baklava french toast with walnuts and seasonal fruit third course. Unique, diverse, and delicious!

DINNER

Arroz (SPANISH)
901 Massachusetts Ave. NW, WashingtonDC 20001
Dinner Served From: Sun, 5–10PM, Mon–Thur, 5:30–10PM, Fri–Sat, 5–11PM

Phone: 202 869 3300

Mike Isabella’s Arroz is described as his “take on the contemporary flavors of Southern Spain and Morocco.” Therefore, for a four-course restaurant week dinner we suggest starting with the winter green salad comprised of shaved apple, san simon, and fried pecans, topped with a smoked pomegranate vinaigrette. The fried cauliflower delivered with crispy pig ear, mitmita yogurt, and grilled greens, plus the chermoula lamb ribs served with kohlrabi salad, spiced yogurt, and coriander honey both sound delightful. Topping that off with carrot & ginger, tahini & caramel, and ras el hanout (Moroccan top-shelf spice mixture) cookies? Amazing.

RPM (ITALIAN)
601 Massachusetts Ave, NW, WashingtonDC 20001
Dinner Served From: 5 PM – 10 PM

Phone: 202 204 4480

Fresh pastas, shareable modern Italian cuisine, and national recognition of excellence define Mt. Vernon Square-area staple RPM. Key dishes to keep an eye out for include the Bucatini Pomodoro and Squid Ink Spaghetti with Spicy King Crab. If they’re available they’re worth a sample.

Sakerum (LATIN AND ASIAN)
2204 14th St NW, Washington, DC 20009
Dinner Served From: 5:30 PM – 11 PM

Phone: 202 518 2222

At the 14th Street NW restaurant that marries Asian and Latin culture and cuisines, starting your restaurant week dinner with the four-piece Sashimi or Nigiri (Tuna, Salmon, Hamachi, and Shrimp) appetizer makes sense, as Sakerum boasts some of the freshest and most inventive fish presentations in the city. Grilled salmon with a sweet miso glaze and grilled corn edamame mix side dish is necessary as well, plus a choice of two from green tea, red bean, mango, and strawberry mochi ice cream served with streusel crumble, sake berry compote, and coconut snow sounds like an ideal completion.

The world famous and arguably signature drink of the French Quarter district is the “Hurricane,” which is legendarily found at Pat O’Brien’s. Made with a sweet “hurricane mix,” gold rum, and garnished with a fresh orange slice and cherry, it’s a delicious delight. As the story goes, the drink was “created during World War II when liquor such as whiskey was in low supply. In order to purchase just one case of these liquors, liquor salesmen forced bar owners to purchase as much as 50 cases of rum, which was plentiful. In an effort to use the abundance of rum that Pat O’Brien’s acquired, the recipe for the Hurricane evolved with the help of an eager liquor salesman. The name came soon after when a glass shaped like a hurricane lamp was used to serve the fruity rum cocktail.”

TELEVISION

LG OLED TV (PURCHASE VIA AMAZON)

So, yeah. LG’s latest version of their OLED television rolls up like wallpaper. That’s insane, right? But, if you’re looking for a TV that does a little less, but is still quite impressive, the 2016 and 2017 4K OLED TVs are still Amazon Alexa and app-equipped, plus promising stunning contrast and intense color presentations. The OLED TV does not require a backlight giving it deep black colors, and making it extremely thin…yes, thin enough that the 2018 model reaches a new level of technological advancement never before seen.

Top 10 Best EDM-Related Films On Netflix and Amazon Prime

As of January 2018, roughly 1/4 of American adults have cut the cord, deciding to leave cable TV behind to subscribe to cable-similar streaming content services. Amazon Prime and Netflix are arguably the two most dominant of these, with roughly 50 million people likely subscribing to one or both services. As well, in North America alone, we’re aware that there’s anywhere from the 30,000 people who annually attend Baltimore’s Moonrise Festival or a half-million total visitors to Las Vegas’ Electric Daisy Carnival. Somewhere between all of these numbers, we’re quite sure that there’s a great reason to provide a list of the top ten EDM-related films streaming on Amazon Prime and Netflix.

From classic re-tellings of the wild history of electronic music culture to inspirational tales of the careers of some of our favorite DJ/producers, plus films that provide an entertaining take on life in and around our favorite music and scenes, there’s something here for everyone. Enjoy!

10. Loving Ibiza

Netflix is available in over 190 countries, which means that if you’re an EDM fanatic wanting to get an on-the-ground or general sense of what a scene looks, feels, and acts like pretty much anywhere in the world, it’s possible in film form. 2013-released Dutch film and TV series Loving Ibiza, which Netflix acquired the rights to in 2016.

The plot of the show that occurs on dance music’s most legendary “White Isle” is listed as follows: “Dutch ex-pats and tourists — including a single dad and his kids, a famous DJ and a heartbroken waitress — work, play and fall in love on Ibiza.” While it’s likely that moments like these did not happen to every single person who ever visited Space, we can tell you that none other than Armin van Buuren is a frequent guest on the TV series version of the popular franchise. Did the mere mention of his name make you want to hear A State of Trance 2017? Of course, if you click that link, we have you covered!

9. Keys To The VIP

Amazon Prime is available in 200+ countries, which means that similar to Netflix if you were looking for “on-the-scene” views about EDM-related nightlife, there are treasures aplenty on the service. Keys To The VIP is a hilarious “game show” about nights out at mega nightclubs, in this case in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Amazingly, what happens “in the six” (Yes, stream Drake RIGHT HERE) is the same as what tends to happen in the DC Metropolitan area and pretty much anywhere else worldwide!

8. XOXO

Have you ever been a guy or girl who was a DJ that won a contest to play at an EDM festival? Did you ever have just the wildest time trying to make it to the stage to play your set? Even worse, did you meet someone while getting ready to play said gig and wonder if they would remember meeting you? No? Yes? This isn’t everyone’s experience at a dance festival, but for  Sarah Hyland — the star both XOXO and Amazon Prime’s re-make of Dirty Dancing — this is exactly what happened and makes for an uplifting film that leaves a smile on your face.

7. Glory Daze

The name Michael Alig might not ring a bell to anyone who’s a fan of modern clubbing, but in New York City’s iconic 1990s, he was one of the “club kids” responsible for evolving underground electronic music culture into the mainstream festival monstrosity it is today. Though not as shockingly graphic as Alig-related 2003 film Party Monster, it’s still a candid documentary look at a wild, fun, and epic age for techno, hardstyle, and still-renowned late-night ragers.

6. 808

50+ DJs and producers discussing the iconic Roland 808 drum machine that’s inspired pretty much every single techno, electro, hip-hop, and bass-booming dance hit of the past 40 years? Yeah. From David Guetta to Diplo and from A-Trak to Pharrell, plus more, the gang’s all here. This one is as much a historical document as it is a quickly paced showcase of probably all of our favorite tune makers, well, ever!

5. Reincarnated

2012 was a wild time. Hot off the success of his solo EDM work and global bass banger creation with production unit Major Lazer, Diplo departed for Jamaica to record a reggae album with Snoop Dogg. That sounds nuts, right? Well, add to it the idea that Snoop Dogg was *reincarnated* as Snoop LION and adapted his hip-hop presentation to include Rastafarianism and it gets even stranger. Diplo and Snoop Dogg spend a significant amount of time together in this documentary recap of the creation of the album. If you haven’t seen it before, it’s a definite must-watch. While you’re at it, click here to listen to the Reincarnated album.

4. Saturday Night Fever

The story of Brooklynite Tony Manero and his disco dancing friends has proven, four-plus decades later, to be as timeless as it is entertaining. While yes, John Travolta’s steps on the dancefloor may not win you any dance contests or audiences with ladies or gentlemen in the nightclub, the film is still absolutely so much fun. The soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever (available for streaming here) is one of the greatest selling albums of all time actually, so if you’re looking for something other than your latest Martin Garrix or Tchami release to relax your ears, it might be worth a retro-style listen.

3. Zedd: True Colors

Anton Zaslavski is an insanely talented musician. As pioneering electro DJ/producer Zedd, he’s always at the forefront of creating music that’s inspired by not just his gifts, but by doing what he can to celebrate how music makes people feel like their best and most epic selves. Basing an album on how colors make someone feel is pretty heavy stuff, but as delivered by Zedd with the help of artists like Selena Gomez and Logic (click their names for more of their hits), it’s an easy hit that connects. Do you want to see how this album came to be? This is documentary for you.

2. I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead

If you only know Steve Aoki as the festival-smashing hard electro producer who throws sheet cakes at thousands of his excited fans, this 2016 Netflix documentary will likely change your opinion. Ever wanted to get to know a bit more about the magic of the man when it comes to the new generation dance music legend? I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead has you covered. If you don’t hear enough of the Dim Mak Records boss’ hits in the documentary, click this link to stream a few more!
